But a good beginning has been made, and if we may trust all reli ible, non. political reports the first year’s eXperience will be on the whole satisfactory. The Sotish market reports refer to the arrival of Canadian eggs in couiplimentary terms, the Glasgow Herald of a few days go ssserting in its Edinburgh market report, ‘trom what has been seen of the Canadian eggs there is every reason to believe they will ultimately be a welcome addition to our resources in the egg line.” Coming nearer home, the London correspondent, under date August, of the Montreal Trade Bulletin has this to say of the egg question: “‘Arrivals of eggs have been small; but de- mand is qaiet aud prices here are unchanged, ‘hough with good enquiry at Liverpool, the long hufidred is 31 dearer, es it is also in Scotland. From enquiries I have been mak- ing in quarters thoroughly well informed on the matter, I learn that the business in Canadian eggs is looked on as a permanent feature ot our future commerce. Consign- ments are coming forward in large quantities to Glasgow, Liverpool and Bristol, the deal. ers at which ports say they are highty pleased with their appearance and packing, their customers endorsing their good opinion of them. The import of Cana- dian eggs was not very large at the beginning of the season, but during the past two monthe the trade in them has been very active, and it is believed by well-informed people here that exporters are well satisfied and are likely to send all their surplus stock. It is not safe to say what people on your side think of the venture, though the large shipments speak for themselves, but advices received here tend to show that the profits Canadian shippors are receiving are on the whole satisfactory. Con- signmeuts coming forward to London ave now confined in narrow limits, but I believe short- ly will be on an extended scale.” Considering the short time this trade has been in existence we may fairly assuine our shippers have done weil, and will do far better in the future. It took longer than a for the redemption of the Bank’s notes at the Spared to make this ship a first-class steel undermentioned cities : — | vessels. (New York Tribune.) In October, Thomas Whittaker will issue The Church of England in Nova Scotia, and the Tory Clergy of the Revolution, by the Rev. Arthur Wentworth Eaton. Mr. Eaton is a Nova Scotian by birth, and for many years has made a special] study of the history and legends of that interesting country. His coming volume treats of the remarkable emigration from the American colonies to Nova Scotia and New Bruns- wick of between 30,000 and 40,000 loyalists, mainly members of the Church of England. Not only was this emigration an important event in itself, but it has never before been adequately treated in any history, a fact that greatly adds to the interest of Mr. Exton’s work, The history of the English Church in Nova Scotia will be given, and the lives of some of the more prominent loyalist clergymen will be sketched. _—<- + Pearls of Wisdom. He who does not look before, lags be- hind. You will not be loved if you care for none but yourself. He who is always prying into other men’s affairs, leads a dangerous life. More people are drowned in the bowl than in the sea. Gaming is the child of avarice, but the parent of prodigality. He that speaks doth sow, but he that holds his peace doth reap. The stone is hard and the drop is small, but a hole is made by the constant fall. The greatest cunning is to have no cun- ning at all. He has much to do who would please everybody. Life is half spent before one knows what life is. 2: <> -o eo —-——-— Desrrucrion or Trovut.—A corresp ond- ent writes; There ig good reason to believe that whatever changes are to be made in the fishery wardens of our Island, the facts cannot be long concealed that our rivers and streams are nearly exhausted of trout and salmon fry. The Morell and adjacent waters are being ** scooped” every week during summer, for a namber of years, and sometimes daily, with drag- nets, traps, and all devices t» catch and destroy our most valuable fish, and that at a season when the fish ascend to spawn. So bold have sume of the poachers become, that a few years ago they ‘‘ducked” the warden in the water, which vost one of them a good penny, and the other had to emigrate. This poaching is not confined to country people, as many of Charlotte town’s ‘‘upper crust” often use methods to secure trout that would make an hones angler blush. Seiticbclpeensit Nearty Marerev tue Wronc Grrr. —A serious mishap very nearly occurred at @ wedding in this vicinity not many days ago. A very loving couple with some friends presented themselves at a certain clergy- man’s house and stated that they wanted to be ‘‘spficed.” All was made ready for the operation and the ceremony was being proceeded with when the solemnity of the occasion was upset by the groom who had been acting very nervously, bursting: out, “Hold on parson, that’s my girl over there.” He came near being married to the wrong girl.
