Colouring Green.—Will some * Globe” rea- der please favour me with a recipe to colour bright and durable green on cotton 2—Lillie. To Renew Black Silk.—Cut a potato in thin slices, and pour over it a quart of water. With this sponge the silk nicely, folding each piece separately. When all are sponged, with a warm iron go over the silk on the wrong side, and iron till dry. Pickling Artichokes.—Slice the artichokes as thin as cucumbers; boil until softened a little in strong salted water. Skim out into a jar, and pour over them boiling hot vinegar, spiced with pepper, cloves and cinnamon. A little chopped onion, added to the artichokes, givs them a better flavour, ‘Curing a Cold.”—In the ‘‘Globe” of Oct. 27 there was some good advice under the above heading, but it lacked the following good advice, viz. :—First wet the head with cold water, or apply a cold wet compress upon the head while the feet are in warm water, to prevent a rush of blood to the brain. Don’t gail in this particular precaution. —Invalid. To Clean White Ostrich Feathers. —To clean white ostrich feathers, let four ounces of white curd ssap be cut small and dissolved in four pints of water, rather hot, in a basin. Make the solution into a lather by beating it with birch rods or wires. Introduce the feathers, and rub well with the hands for five or six minutes. After the soaping wash in clean water as hot as the hand can bear. Shake un- til dry. Roly-Poly Pudding.—Take a quart of flour, rub iato it three tablespoonfuls of lard, roll it out, cut into four pieces ; place a lump of but- ter on each; flour well; place one above an- other, then roll out again about six inches wide and twelve long; take some preserve (plum is best(, spread it on pretty thick, wet the edges of the paste tomake it stick closely, then roll it over and over ; tie it wp securely in a weil- floured cloth, bo) two hours, and serve with nice melted butter. That Case of Catarrh.—A New York Times’ correspondent mentions the case of a twenty- ear sufferer from catarrh who smoked mullen eaves three times a day, directly after eating ; two and sometimes three pipefuls. This cured the patient. It is some six or seven years since the cure was effected, but as near as she ean recollect she received some benefit after smoking one week, Would advise fifteen-year sufferer to smoke until cured—let it be ore year or two, Close the mouth and draw the smoke through the nostrils. The hearing was not effected m the case of catarrh of twenty years. A Good Plain Pie Crust.—Sift one quart of flour into a bowl; chop inte the flour (using a chopping knife) one half pound of good firm lard ; chop until very fine; pour in enough ice-water to make a stiff dough, and work it in with your bands; flour your hands; work your dough into shape ; handle it quickly and as littleas possible; flour your pastry board, and roll out your dough very thin; always roll from you: have ready oue half pound of good butter that has been washed in two or three cold waters to rid it of salt; spread the dough with butter; fold it up, then roll it out thin ; spread with butter ; fold again, and re- peat the operation until the butter is all used up. How easily one can tell whether a man is glad from within, er whether it is only the sunbeams that chance to fall upon him. Hap- piness is not the work of a chisel and mallet ; not mortised into the soul; itis ‘‘put out” like the arm of a tree, whose green, unvailed sleeve flutters with the life it shares. _Itis the honest, “plodding” workman who rises to an elevated position in the world.
