L. C, OWEN, ‘ Agent. Ch’town. “Well, tell me why you’ve come,” said Leonard, his voice trembling at the taunt, but still the cooler of the two. “Tl have come to know why you have not kept your word.” “What word?” “Your promise that if I did not visit Miss White you would not.”’ “Ll mever made such a promise.” “But I say you did.” “I could not be such a fool as to make such a promise, nor so little of a gentleman 4s not ve accept the lady’s invitation if she rent me one.”’ “Frank Leonard, Miss White never sent you an invitation since you and I got to know each other and parted.’ said Dixon. “You must not judge of ber treatment of me by her treatment of yourself. Here is & printed invitation to a picnic received to- day, and as it isa formal matter I violate no confidence or etiquetts in showing it to you. ” “She didn’t send it! You stole it!” This in Dixon’s voice was distinctly heard by a number of now very much interested people. Then, like an echo of the Jast word, a shot rang Out, and a body was heard to fall te the floor. Fearing togo Virginian, the boarders. Fully five minutes elapsed between the shot and the arrival of two officers. This is what they found: Harry Dixon lying dead on the floor with a pistol near hia right hand, and Frank Leonard standing over him and trying to force water between the set, purple lips. “He shot himself!’ was Leonard's excla- mation on seeing the officers. Neither the officers, nor the coroner’s jury, nor the grand. jury believed Leon- ard’s story. If they had, he would not have been sent to Moyamensing prison and kept there for five months without bail. But even five months did not much abate the excitement caused by this shooting. At the trial, which lasted 10 days, with the brokenhearted father of the unfortunate young map in attendance, the courtroom was packed. The case was entirely circumstantial The talk already recorded was given in evi- dence. The two pistols were found, one in atable drawer of Leonard’s room and the other on the floor beside the dead man, with one chamber discharged, which the bullet taken from Dixon’s brain exactly fitted. Buttken the same might be said of any bul!et from either pistol From first to last Leonard maintained that Dixon shot himself, but the proseca- tien tried to show that from the man’s this was impossible, and they tn- sisted that in os five minutes before the officers came Leonard had changed the pistols. Public opinion was much divided as to the guilt or innocence of the accused man, and bets were freely offered and taken as te what would be the verdict of the jury. After deliberating % hours, the jury brought in a verdict of “not guilty,” aad half the people applauded, and the other half were disappointed. But this was not the end of the tragely. The young lady in the case, who bad been a belle, never again went into society, but died two years afterward of a broken if ever a woman did in the world. Tom Marshall of Kentucky was as witty as he was eloquent, and as ill starred as he was capable. He might have been the first man in the land but for his unfortunate habit of inebriety—a habit that toward the last became his chronic conditjon. He had the faculty of making friends apd retaining them, and among those who stuck by him to the end was Dr. Tweedy of Jessamine county, quite as distinguished in his own sphere as was Marshall. Tom was taken down almost a year be- fore hisdeath with rheumatic gout, and Dr. to attend him. The patient submitted reluctantly to the treatment, which involved entire abstinence from the exciting cause. After a few weeks Marshall mega to mend, and on coming in one morning the doctor was delighted to find that thed had disappeared and that patient in bigh spirits The cause of this hilarity was evident in the glasses and bottles on the table. A friend in Cincinnati had sent Tom as a present a case of the finest mixed liquors “Come, doctor!” cried Marshall. “You must try a glass of this cognac. It is the finest and mellowest that ever passed a man’s lips.” “Ah, Tom,” said the doctor, “this will never do. Have you so soon forgotten that this stuff is the cause of al] your suffering?” “Is it indeed?” “3¢ ia.” “Well, fill up your glass,” langhed Tom, “for now that we have found the cause the sooner we get rid of it the bette ALFRED Rs CaLnoux isease his was DISABLED THE MAN-OF-WAR.
