Come, Jack, Tell U: lt_lsn't True! Jack Dempsey, we are told, is, planning to promote a flfi-round bout‘ between, Paulino Uzcudun and a ‘suitable opponent” at Reno, Nev. on July 4i It is to be hoped that Jack is no more seriousabout this promotion venture than he was about his num- erous " mebac‘ " and "retirement" announcements. Of course, there is the consolation that no one except ‘sports writers, the referee and ush- ers would have to attend the fight. Watchlngva. fighter oi Paullnos , type fight for even ten rounds is bad enough, but any one brave enough to consider sitting through a 25- round bout between any oi the cur- rent heavyweights certainly would be entitled to a Carnegie medal for heroism. It is doubtful that there is a heavyweight in the , country who could still raise his arms after 20 rounds of fighting. Paulino stagger- ed through 15 rounds with Max Schmeling two years ago, before he had started to go back, and the mem- ory of that bout is enough to con- vince anyone that neither Max nor Paulino would be able to keep the spectators awake for 25 rounds. Eight scouts took the signalling hike on Monday and put in some ex- cellent practice including the send ing of messages to a third station out oi range of the original station. Expert signallers in this troop in- clude Don Stewart, Jack Ritchie and Lloyd Williams. This troop all agreed to purchase shorts before the visit oi the Chief l" mmissloner, as they plan to put‘ on a special signalling demonstration. Uniforms It is the earnest desire oi the Pro- vincial Commissioner and other scout leaders that all scouts will do their best to have complete uniforms, in- cluding shorts, before the visit of the Chief Commissioner‘. All Scoutmas- ters will therefore please see that their boys have scout pins, badges and neckerchiefs in order, and pur- chase as much oi their uniforms as possible. They will be néeded for Max Baer Is Opponent camp at any raw Max Baer, young Californiam- is slated for Paulinos‘ opponent in the proposed bout. Baer has been un- impressive _in 10-round bouts with Risko, Loughran, Schaaf and other heavies and it is hard to imagine anyone paying real money to see a 25-round bout featuring Baer and Pauline. If Dempsey stages his bout, it prob- ably will be the prize promotional "bust" oi recent years. The proposed date of the bout, July 4, is the day following the Schmeling-Stribling championship at Cleveland and even though the ‘championship’ fight is not regarded as an especially attractive nor im- portant affair, it would overshadow the Reno bout. Dempsey contends that few fans from the west coast will go to Cleve- land for thevSchmeling-Stribllng con- test, but it is hard to imagine that anyone would go to Reno for the , Gilwell Camp So far seven men from this pro- vince have signified their intention of attending. There is yet room for five more. Please remember the dates, July 14 to 24, cost $5.00. Visit of the Chief Commissioner Final word has-been received that Mr. John Stiles, Chief Commissioner of the Boy Scouts in Canada will visit Prince Edward Island on the 5th of June and remain until "the 11th. Already the Scout leaders have mapped out a full itinerary. A large reception has been plann- ed, which will take the form of a parents, associate members and in- terested citizens will be invited.
