Once again the UPEI Panthers showed that they are a force to be reckoned with. In the first home ame of the season, the Panthers attle_d to a 22 - 21 win over the St. Francis xavier X-Men at Mac— ' Adam field last Saturday afternoon The ame was played under very mrserab e conditions. A biting wind and chilling rain persisted during the encounter. But the avid enthus- iasm displayed by the fans in attend- ance were a great 'help in cheering the Panthers to their victory. In the first quarter of the game, the Panthers were kept in their own end of the field by the powerful X- ~Men. A touchdown was then scored by Eason and a convert was kicked by Hartley. This gave the X-- Men an 8-0 lead. The quarter-back John Dionisi op- ened the scoring for the home team with a touchdown. Mencuso kicked 'a convert and Read kicked the ball on a subsequent play which scored a touchback for the Panthers. This tied the score. U.P.E.l. then took the lead with a touchdown by Yost and a convert by Manucso. Two St. F.X. players were injured at the end of I the ‘seeond quarter, however this did not alter the 15-8 score in fav- our of the Panthers. The X-Men came on very strongly in the third quarter. Power of St. F.X. carried the ball to U.P.E.I.’s 9 yard line before he was sto ped by a Panther layer. The X- en’s ' uarter—back elly scored a touch- own and a convert was kicked by soccer The University of B.E.I.’s Soccer . team met with a surprising amount of success in the RBI. Men’s Invita- tional Soccer Tournament held in Summerside. Entered in the annual event were six teams from two prov- inces. Of particular significance to the young and inexperienced PAN- THERS (there are no seniors on the team) was the fact that Mount Allison, an established veteran of soccer, played at the ‘Intercollegiate level, had two teams entered in the two day event. Having had little experience play- ing together as a team, the fledgling PANTHERS went into their first game (against the so—called Mt. A. Number Two team, which local ob- servers later rated about equal to’ their Number One team) not know- ing what to expect. U.P.E.I. started slowly in the first half but managed to get a goal from Barry Hogan. In the second half the complexion of game changed as the PANTHERS, sporting a 1-0 lead, began to apply pressure. Eventually two more goals .were added to U.P.E.I.’s total. These came as a result of a great individual effort on the part of Mike Mooney' and 'a fine kick off the foot of Tom I Cusack, to wrap up the victory. Meanwhile Mt. A.’s other team was having trouble with a Charlott- etown team labelled the ‘Inter- nationals’. The final score was 3-0 5 BEAT x ‘ down but the convert was success“- fuglel blocked by the Panthers. St. F. . regained the lead near the end (if the third quarter. Ambrose‘sc— ored a touchdown and a convert was kicked by Hartle . This made- the score 21-15 in avour of the X-Men-. ' . The fourth quarter belonged to the Panthers. Shortly after the beg- ' inning of this quarter, the home team advanced steadily down the field. Yost scored a touchdown. Then 'Manucso- scored the winning pornt by kicking a convert. The Panthers held on to this lead for, the rest of the game. The only threat came in the last minute of the ame when the X-Men started to a Vance toward the U.P.E.I. goal line. This attempt was thwarted by the Panther’s Richards, who inter- cepted the ball at the 53 yard line. The Panthers ran out the clock to assure them the victory. SUCCESS for the local team. The -Intemation— als had made it to the finals. Their opponent for the Championship round was decided Saturday mom- ing when the PANTHERS encoun- tered the Canadian Forces Base Summerside squad. This tense con- test see—sawed back and forth as first the PANTHERS scored then C.F.B. went ahead 2-1. The Summ- erside team exercised good control until late in the second-half when Tom Cusack netted his second goal of the morning. This set the scene for U.P.E.I.’s overtime victory. Barry Hogan kicked the winning goal. I, Unfortunately for the PANTHERS the Championship game started at 130 pm. or exactly 90 minutes after the completion of the tough second round.- In the final analysis :the U.P.E..I. representatives finished in runner-up position' ahead of ot- her college teams. Such is the past. This week the Island Senior Soccer League resumes play for the fall season. Four teams, including C.F.B. Summerside, are entered to date. SucceSs for the U.
