SO URIS ITEMS, About 4 p. m. on Saturday, a gale com- menced from the south east. At the time only two or three vessels were in port, the American fishing fleet having been reported to have gone to Margaree, C. B. But about five o’clock the vessels commenced to come in sight and within an hour the whole of about thirty sail was eafely anchored or moored inside the Breakwater. To see them rounding the Breakwater and run- ning up to Knight’s wharf and the Railway wharf was a grand sight, and the cheering on the wharf as each vessel arrived safely showed the brotherly feeling that exists among the fishermen, end their praise of the Souris Breekwater as aifording them a harbor of shelter. Special praise is due to Captains Hardy, Parsons, Campbell and Cuddy, fur the way they handled their vessels. They arrived when the storm was at its height, and looking from the shore it seemed almost impossible for them to make tieir way through the fleet without doing damage; but to their credit, be it said, they brought their vessels safely through and moored them at the Railway wharf. The block at the end of the Break- water which was placed in position on Friday night by Mr. Smuh, has_ received very little damage, as far as can be ascer- tained this morning. It was oaly partially ballasted. When this block is com- pleted the barbor of Souris will te second to none on the Island as a harbor of refuge, and although Souris is charged with re- ceiving so much money from the public chest for the construction and repair of this work, it is ve y evident that Souris alone does not receive the benefic of the breakwater, but ail who are engaged in the fishing business whether Ainerican or Canadian, aa it is in close proxmity to the fishing grounds and safe to appruach at all times and in all kinds of weather. LIQUOR AND A DEAD MAN, An esteemed correspondent at Souris sends Tne Examiner the following addi- tional particulars regarding an incident to which reference has already been made in these columns: The schooner Maggie Alice arrived at Souris on Friday (yester- day) morning. She bad a rough passage on her last St. Pierre trip. Her captain and owner, James Lannigan, reports that on the return trip, when about fifty miles off St. Paul’s Island, be came across a wrecked schooner on ber beam ends and fall of water. On going on board it was found that the wreck, oa which no name visible, had on board ® quantity of liquor and tobacco and one dead man. Five barrels of I'quor and five kegs of tobacco were taken on board the Maggie Al ce and brought to Souris and handed over to the Collector of Customs. The liquor ete., was afterwards shippsd on boerd the cars for Charlot‘etown where the Scott Act is supposed tc be in force. The body of the dead man being much de composed, was wrapped in canvass and buried at sea. The probab:lity is that the remainder of the crew are drowned, but no traces of any bodies but the one could be found on or about the wreck. was The St. Petersburg Grashdanin has been enspended for publishing despatches AMUASLASMAUAUAAAAASAGAA LGA AALALLGLALGULALAALLAASAALAALALAAALARLGALGALALLEAAAALGAGAAdMAALA from Paris adversely criticising Presideat Faure and the Frerch army. Oceexcel- lent feature of her singing is her clear enunciation, a person being able to hear every word, Mr. William Buckingham, who was re moved from the pos:tion of Deputy Minis- ter of the Interior in 1878 by Sir John Macdonald, has written to tbe press to say that he has not applied to be reinstated, nor has he written to any member of the Government except to say kind words for Deputy Ministers whose positions were threatened. The New York Sunday Herald of Oct. 18th contains a graphic account and vivid picture of the Rev. Albert B. Simpson, who on that day thrilled an audience in New York city to such an extent that the meeting gave a8 a collection $122,000 §The rey. gentleman said that God, not be, in- spired the people to give that vast eum for foreign missions. “In the name of Him who shed his blood on Calvary for our salvation,” he pleaded, “I present the bill from my Master’s hand and eall upon you to pay the debt.” This remarkable man wa- born on P. He gave up a salary of $5,000 a year atthe 13th Presbyterian Church in New York to “ get at the peo- ple,” ashe pbrased it, and he is now head of the missionary alliance. In three meetings, within a few months, he has raised over athird of a million doilars.
