Everyone remembers the pilizrimag undertaken by the Doukhobors of the Saskatchewan ctlouies last fall and its disastrous results, the sudering, loss and prlvation endured. and the fact of the pil- grims being carried back to their homes almost by force by the olfioers of the Gov- ernment. They had abandoned their stock, which was collected and sold and the proceeds kept for them whenever they should reach`a better frame of mind. But ‘ long after their enforced return they held on to the delusion that their duty was to travel and preach, and it was feared that with the' coming on of spring another pil- grimage would again deplete the Douk- Lhobor settlements. It is gratify ing to learn that better coun- sels have prevailed, and the great body of last year’s pilgrims have decided to settle down and take up a homestead for each family according to the practice of other settlers. Down to the piresept time they had insisted on holding all property in common and had not conformed to Cana- dian usage. During the period of their discontent they were determined to leave Canada if they could not be permittedilo have their own way in almost everything. Their better frame of mind' appears to be Peter Verigin whom they trust quite im- Canadian Government does not wishto oppress them, but to treat them and all others with perfect. fairness and justice. In their present attitude - the Donkhobcrs are industrious, honest, Godfearing peo ple, but have been distrustful of Govern- ments because of the intolerance with which they were treatedkin Russia. "This distrust will pass away as they come to better understand our people and our in- stitutions. BRIBERY OF A REPRESENTATIVE. . In our Oblawa. despatch of yesterday mention was made of an alleged attempt to purchase to the support of the Ross Government in Ontario a member by the name of Gamey, who had been elected in opposition, and that the revelation had caused great consternation in Liberal circles. ‘ We find the following fuller par- ticulars in a Toronto telegram tothe St. John Sun, which, if true, show that the Pmvlncial Treasurer of the Ross Govern- ment was clearly implicated in the dis- graceful attempt to purchase support, and that the member who was approached pretended to yield in order to secure proof positive of the bribery, _afterward dis- closing the facts iufull. The following is the statement of the 'fcase as given io the Sun’s telegram : A The Ontario Legislature was the scene of the biggest? political sensation in years today. R. R.
