Also flying in this air- craft were two members of the Bel- gian alrforce. Sgts, van Draege and Emile dc Konick. who are tak- ing navigational training. at the Summerside station. Their rin- clpal task on yesterday's fllgh was to keep a sharp outlook for -any- thing that might lead to the loca- ion of the plane or its two missing crewmembcrs. The briefing, which was held at 9:00 a. m. was conducted by searchmaster S-L. J. M. Wicken assisted by F-L T. M. Webster. They outlined in detail every- thing that was known regarding the missing plane, including its time of departure from summer- side. its intended exercises and the area in which these exercises would normally have been carried out. S-L Wlcken said that parachutes men but as was customary on local flying over the Island. the life belts or dinghy was not included in their safety equipment. because they would normally be over land. at all times. He pointed out to the crews the areas which were covered-show- lng that the areas in which the to have been i.e., the whole Island. had been searched no less than five times. as were the surround- lng coastal waters. Possible areas in cape Breton. Nova Scotis. New Brunswick. and Gulf of st. Lawrence had receiv- ed sufficient or partial coverage. Those areas that had received incomplete coverage chiefly be- cause of poor weather. were the areas visited by the six Expediters and two Lancastrs taking part in yesterdayts search. The crews were briefed on the favorable weather conditions they would find in all areas. Em. Wlcksn instructed each plane to contact Summerside about 1-2 hour after take-off and within one hour every hour thereafter; and to contact the home base im- medlately if they observed any as clues. Among the clues said that they should look far. apart from observing the whole plane intact. were bits of wreck- age. unususl cuts or swaths in tress. and may should invest- igats all smoke or fire. He said lobster fishing buoys in the coastal waters and patches of flowers on ths.land would re- semble the yellow color of the missing plans. but unless sure of what they were. 19. for their respective srsas and other planes took part in the search later in the day to check on re- ports as .soon as received from people in N3, and P.E.I. g The plans piloted by !'lO. Many Boats Observed Lobster boats were observed in waters of all areas covered. in such numbers and location that if any wreckage were afloat in the area it would almost be sure to be observed by at least one oi the boats. At the search control center in Summerside. a record was kept of all reports received from civilians; and each was thoroughly invest- igated. They included reports from persons in many parts of Prince Edward Island. and also from persons in New Brunswick who had seen what could have been the.plane which was later reported missing. some of these were quickly proven to have been other planes. but some could have been the lost plane. and these reports were quickly followed up by a search of the area. Nothing possible was considered improbable in the search: as an example, the remark of a lady in Summerside which was overheard on the street to the effect she had heard a plane crash near Rich- mond that afternoon was thor- Ollllhly invemzsted despite the fact her remark was not consider- ed authentic by those that heard Today more planes will follow up any' information that may be received. and the search will con- tinue on. a reduced scale. because. as one airforce spokesman said yesterday, "We know the area in which, the missing plane must necesslilliiy be. and we will con- tillllesto make every effort to find -comers Continued from page i the grand and senior male champ- ionships.
