Allen Hanson, an employe on the North- ern & Western Railway, on Saturday, at- tempted to jump upon an icy flat ear which was moving rapidly past Marysville station. He missed his footing and fell beneath the car, which passed over his leg, severing it from his body and cutting it in three pieces. His skull was also crushed in. He died im thirty minutes. A party of three hunters who were out after deer in Tehama county, Cal., a short time ago, found, while following a trail, that they were in turn followed by a gang of six or seven mountain lions. They quickly beat a retreat, but the lions fol- lowed till they had nearly reached home, sometimes coming within a rod or two of the party, but retreating at a shot. A clerk in Louisville invested $50 in pork, at a bucket shop, the other day, and succeeded in running it up to $5,000. Then he determined to make it $10,000 and quit, and get married. His $5,000 crept up almost to the desired amount, and then the market took a turn against him, and in a few hours he didn’t have even the original $50. He will not marry this spring. ; A citizen of Ionian, Mich., rang the bell at a house when he ca led, and then stood patiently on the iron dvorstep until the slow servant opened the door. Then he turned pale and cried out that he was paralyzed; for when he tried to walk he could not move. The Duke of Westminster, who used to be a Liberal, recently sold in a fit of spleen, a valuable historic picture of Mr. Gladstone. Naturally the work of art was readily purchased by an admirer of the British statesman, and now his grace is angry because all the world is laughing at him.
