Oct. 1 — (C?) - A sham-shooting grenade - throwing lawyer from Vancouver, Lt.-Col. Charles Cecil Merritt, is the first Canadian to win the Victoria Cross 1n the Second Great War. Defence Minister Ralston today aced Col, Merrittu name at the head of a list of 187 Canadians who fought with the gallantry which calls for distinction in the Battle of Dieppe. Col. Merritt is s prisoner of war and is believed slightly wounded. He will not be able to collect his award personally, for a time at least, but his wife at Belleville, 0nt., and his mot-her at Vancouver, l’ in the midst of worry over his safety, were thrilled at the fact that his bravery was recognized by bestowal of the lihnpire‘: highest award for gallantry. CITATION "For rnatchless gallantry and in- Bllirlng leadership whilst command- inp his battalion during the Dieppe rad Aug. 19, 1942. From the point of landing his unit's advance had to be made across a bridge in Pour- vilie which was swept by very heavy machine-gun. mortar and artillery fire and the first pnrtics were most- ly destroyed and the bridge thick- ly covered by their bodies. “A daring lead was required, wav- ing his helmet Lt-Col. Merritt rush- ed forward shouting ‘come on over. There is nothing to worry B50119 here.’ He thus rsonally led the survivors of at east four parties in turn across the bridge. Quickly organizing these he led them for- ward and when held up by ellelll! pill boxes he a ain headed rushes which succeede in clearing them. In one case he himself destroy“ the occupants of the post by throw- ing grenades into it. Prisoner of War "After several of his runners be- came casualties he himself kept contact with his different positions. Although twice wounded Lt-Col. Merritt continued to direct the unit's operations with great villi)!‘ and determination and while or- ganizing the withdra/wal he stalked a sniper with a Bren gun and sil- enced him. He then COOIIY 89" orders for the departure and an- nounced his intention to hold 0i! and ‘act ewzn with’ the enemy. "When last seen he was collect- ing Bren and Tommy guns and preparing a defensive position which successfully covered the withdrawal from the beach. Lt-Col. Merritt is now reported to be a prisoner of wnr.
