Bird, shows plainly in | the Boston Herald (1) that New England ; cannot do without our coa!, and that she | must have it; (2) that there is a probability that cual will be aimitted free into the States before long; and (3) that if the | Americans, particularly the peop'e of New England, get a fair chance, it will be to | their interests as well as ours that the coa! |duty be abolisheds which means un- paralleled activity in our coal mines in the future. The folly and wrong of giving our coal mines to & foreign syndicate is, under these circumstances the mure apparent. —The Montreal Gazette remarks that Sir John Thompsou’s speech upon the Manitoba school question ‘‘was not so much a defence of the action of the Govern* ment as it was 4 calm, clear, exhaustive factum of the whole case, every point and argument being carefuily and plainly put, so that there could be no mistaking his meaning. lie is determined that the stiictly jegal aspect of the case shall not be lost sight of in the attempts of demagogues or fauaties to drag it into the arena of poli, tics, but at the same time he made it abun? dantly clear that there was not the slightest intention of attempting to escape fuil min) isterial responsibility for ali advice given to His Excellency.” —An occasion of great rejoicing to all lovers of woman’s advancement is *he action of the Wyomiug legislators. The unanimous adoption by a body of men, of a resoluticn setting forth the usqualified success vi Woman Suifrage in the past twenty-five years is the strongest endorsement possible Coming just at this time, when the enemies of the tranchise have been demanding a retraction of the privilege, it is an event ol no ordinary significance. Here is the resolution in full; cut it out and send it to every doubting Thomas :— ‘** Be it resolved by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming: That the possession and exercise of suffrage bo the women of Wyome ing fer the past quarter of a century, has wrought vo harm and has done great good in many ways; that it has largely aided in banishing ciime, pauperism and vice from this state and that without any violent or oppressive legislation; that it has secured peaceful and orderly elections, good government and remarkable degree of civilizs tion and public order, end we point with pride to the fact that after nearly twenty-five years of woman suffrage, not one county in Wyom- ing has a poor house, that our jails are almost empty, and crimes, except tha: by strangers in the state almost unknown, and as the result of experience, we urge every civilized com- munity on earth to enfranchise its women without delay. Resoived, That an authenticated copy ot these resoiutions be forwarded by the ov- ernor of the state to the Legislature of every state and territory in this country and to every legislative body in the world; and that we request the press throughout the civilized world to call the attention of their readers to these resolutions. Farmers’ Union. The members of the above union, of Lots 45 and 46, having severed their connection with those of Lot 44, through no fault of the former, held their weekly meeting at the Rockbarra Schoolhouse, on Friday evening, 3rd inst. Upwards of fifty members were present, and the first raeet- ing under the new regime was an un qualified success. Mr. Jobn Allan Me- Vonald was delegated to the chair and Mr. John Alfred McDonald was appointed secretary. An interesting discussion followed. —-——-~- $+9°oe ——----" A Tresite Arrliction. — In obituary column this eveunwg will be found an, ncunced the death of a young son of Michael Murphy, 161 Gottingen Street—Heward Fraucis, aged 3 years and 9 months. AN INCIDENT OF STRAIN'S EXPEDITION. i never have got the bearings quite, Though I’ve followed the course for many a year, If he was crazy, clean outright, Or oniy what you might say was “queer.” He was just « simple sailor man, I mind it as well as yesterday, When we mersed aboard of the old “Cyane.” Lord ! how the time does slip away ! That was five and thirty ) ears ego, When ships was ships and mer was men, And sailors wasn't afraid to go ~ To sea in a Yankee vessel then. He was only a sort of bosun’s mate, _ But every inch of bim taut and trim ; Stars and anchors and togs of state Tailors don’t build for the likes of him. He flew a noeaccount sort of name, A reg’iar fo’ castle *‘Jim” or *‘Jack," i With a plain McGinnis” abaft the same, Giner’ly reefed to simp!e ‘*Mack.” Mack, we allowed wes sorter queer— Ballast or compass wosn’t right; j Till he licked four juices, one day, a fear Prevailed that he hadn't larned to tight, But I reckoned the captain knowed his man, When he put the flag in his hand the day That he went ashore from the old “‘Cayne,” On a madman’s cruise for Darlen Bay, Forty years in the wilderness We toiled and suffered and starved with Strain, Losing the number of many a mess in the Devil's swamps of the Spanish Main. All of us starved and many died. { One lay down in his dull despair; His stronger messmate went to his side,— We lef« them both in the jungle there. It was hard to part with shipmates so; But standing by wou'd have done no good. We heard them moaning all day, so s!ow We dragged along through the weary wood. McGinnis, he suffered the worst of all; Not that he ever piped his eye, Or wouldn’t have answered to the call lf they'd sounded it for ‘‘All bands to die.” I guess ‘twould have sounded for him before, But the grit inside of him kept him strony, Till we met relief on the river shore; And we all broke down when it came along. All but McGinnis, Gaunt and tall, Touching his hat, and standing square : “Captain, the flag” And that was all. He just keeled over and foundered there. | The flag! We thought he had lost his head, — it mightn’t be mach to lose at best,— Till we can e, by and by, tr Jig his bed, And vet: vad it folded around his breast. He lay so «ain and smiling there, With the tisg wrapped tight around his heart— Maybe he saw his course a!l fair, Oaly we couldn’t read the chart. James Jerrrey Roocns, AQ ED PUBLIC OPINION. The Meeting at | Little Pond, A meeting was held at Little Pond School House on Monday evening, 6th March, iust., to consider the provisions of the Re- served Bill of last session. Notwithstand- ing the short notice given, there was a large attendance. Charlies McDonald Esq., occupied the chair, and Edward A. Me- Donald acted as secretary. J. C. Under- hay, M. P. P., explained the various provi- sions of the bili, showing that the mortgage vote might be used as a means to control and everrule the vote of the people in every district inthe Province, that the disfran- chisement of any portion of the electors by rearrangement of the districts or any other means, without direct instructions from the people, was a power which ao legislature should assume, and if acknowledged by the people might be used at any time to retain in power a party in oppos- ition to the wishes and interests of those who elected them, and that the proposed hiving of Lot 56, DeGros Marsh and Stur- geon was alike uojust to the supporters ef both parties. Mr. J. Nichol followed, strongly con- demning the various provisions of the biil, and pointing out clearly the disadvantage it would be to the people of Lot 56 to be included in the District of Georgetown, and conciuded by moving the following resolu- tion, which was unanimously adopted : Resolved, That the revival of the mort- gage vote, the disfrauchisement of any por- von of the electors, the re-arrangement of the districts for political purposes, or any vther legislation calculated to retain any party in power otherwise than by honestly conducting the affairs of the Province so ss to advance the interests of the people, does not meet with the approval of this meeting.
