I may remark, in pa2sing, that, in making this comparison, I wish to treat i the late Government with the utmost fair- t ness. [shall not lay before the Honse a single atatuuent that is net correct—a single statement that may not be verilied in the public Departments. I feel that | shonld not be serving the House and the ecuntry as it ought to be served, by making any other than a perfectly correct state ment of the reductions we have made. For the purposes of comparison, it would per haps be fairer to take the year 1877. But that was ile first year the late Governinen! ment were in power, and Ii do net wish *o do them any injustice what- ever. I will take the year 1878. In 1878 the salary of the Attorney General was $1,600 Last year the amount paid was $1,356.33. The present Government took oflice in Marcii, ani the late Atterney General was, ef course, entitled to his salary up to that date. While the election contest which en- sued was going en, that gentleman pro- claimed to the country that he would not accept the sum that was awarded him. He went tothe Provincial Treasury andinform ed the official there tnat he would not take . . a a - 5 am ang 2 his salary at the rate it was fixed. Bat the excitenient of the elections passed away. We all covled down; and aftera time the late Attorney General came forward and tdéok from the Treasury the whele amount at the rate of $1,600. He was perfectly right in dving so; and f ouly mention the fact in order to account for the unusual sum paid. Since the present Government came into power the Attorney Genaral lias e the amount he will receive for 1860. Then there is the cost of the Prothonotary and hia deputies, For 1878 it was $2,364.00. In 1830 we propose to make i# $2,520.00, ha The crier of the Supreme Court received in e 1878 $130. Last year he was paid $100, . and the same amount will be paid this year. ‘4 In 1878 the Clerks of the County Courts “ received $4,700 ; and that amount remains the same. The suits and disbursements of the County Courts in 1877 amounted to A $1127.91, in 1878 to 1401.82, in 1879 they were reduced to 8973.80; and this vear we * purpose a still further reduction to S801—/ et s¢ t showing « reduction in this seurce since | fixed period, ' 1878 of about $600. In 1878 the cost of elections was $528. In 1879 it $3921.60. Tuis year we propose that it shall be $50. The actual cost of the recent election of the Hon, Commissioner of Pub- lic Works was $47.52. We have, however, set down $50. The balance will net, ef course, be expended. Now there is the cost of the Executive Corneil. The of that, incurred by the late Gevernment, in most 1873, was carried forward into 13879, There was paid for mileage ot xecutive Councillors in 1878, only the sum of $143.70: but in 1879 the mem- bers of the late Government had to he paid the amonnts they were entitled to, and the sum paid was $1,262.62. This year the ex- nenditure under that head will be about $90’. The whele amount pajd in coen- nectien with the expenses of the Executive Council in 1879, was $1,626.92; in 1879 the amount paid was $1,952.54. This year we vropese that the whole expenditure shall ve $1,009, In 1878 the total cost of public education was $05,456.62. in 1879, it was $91.007.87. This year wa propose to spend 02 this inost important service, $91,894. 44. a very considevable increase ! But it is an increase that is inevitable, and one that is in the interest of the ecvuntry, be- cause it is advisable to vive the people the advantages of a good education. i tind that when our oppenents were in : been paid at the rate of $1,500, and that ts| power in 1877, the total cost of education jwas $30,805.60. But there is one ithing very noticeable in this matter. It \is proclaimed in the public press and by our epponents in. the country that the Government, in 1877, paid five quarters’ salary, and itis argued that as they paid five quarters in 1377, and three quarters’ in 1878, therefore, they paid in the two years the whole eight quarters’ salary. Now, I wish to show the country that this is an entirely erroneous statement. I wish call your attention, Mr. Speaker, to this fact : that at the present time the salaries ef school teachers are payable at a certain Bute under the old system j . nonadinely “s to | Correspondingly cheap. 3 Building Lots on the Green ‘* Boyle’s Tannery.”’ Also, part of WATER LOTS Ne. 17 and 18 in GEORGETOWN, immediately adiacent to the Poblic Wharf (on the Hast Side) and hav- ing a front on Wood Sireet. ‘Twelve acres of Good Marsh Laad, situated near Fullerton’s Creek, Towuship No. 48, and lately in the possession of Alex.
