eR = THe Datty EXAMINER, JUNE 25, 1878. Prince of Wales College. Amone those present at the Examination this morning were D. Davies, M. P., and Miss Davies, Mrs. Hensley, Rev. J. Me- Leod, Hon. L. H. Davies, Hon. W. D. Stewart, Hon. John Longworth, Dr. Tay- lor, William Weeks, Esq., E. Coffin, Esq., D. Martin, Esq, J. Lepage, Esq., Mr. Manning, and Mr. Lawson, of the Patriot. His Honor the Lieutenant Governor was absent through indisposition The number of admissions during the year was sixty-nine—36 from the country and 33 belonging to Charlottetown. The average attendance has been about sixty ; the average age of the students, 18 years. The course of study has been enlarged by the addition of Chemistry, Natural History and Logic. The professors, the students, the pa- rents of students and the public, generally, have, we think, good reason to be satisfied with the result of the examination con- ducted by Messrs. Caven and Peters. The assistance of Messrs. Alexander and Borth- wick has evidently been a great advantage to Professor Anderson and to the students. The College was, probably, never in a better position than at present. Hons. J. Longworth, L. H. Davies, W. D. Stewart, Rev. J. M. McLeod and William McKechnie, Esq., spoke briefly in congra- tulation of teachers and students. We think—in fact we are quite sure— the Hons. L. H. Davies and W. D. Stew- art misrepresented public opinion, when they said there is a disposition abroad to abolish Prince of Wales College. There are not, we venture to say, a dozen men on the whole Island who would do away with Prince of Wales College. True, there are some, perhaps many, who think that its support, by the public, savors rather too much of ‘‘ Protection,” or what a certain class of politicians term the “ legalized robbery of the many for the benefit of the few.” In other words they think the public should not be taxed to keep up an institution for the higher education of the sons of comparatively wealthy men. But this is a secondary consideration, while the existence of the school de- pends upon public support; and no one now, for a moment, grudges his pro- portion of the money which maintains the Prince of Wales College. The advantage it has been, the good it is doing, directly and indirectly, cannot be weighed in the same balance as the cash it costs. We feel sure that the people are proud of Prince of Wales College; that instead of closing it, they would rather improve it and enlarge its sphere of usefulness; and, on their be- half, we repudiate the feeling attributed to them by Messrs. L. H. Davies and W. D. Stewart. The reports of Messrs. Caven and Peters, and also the Prize List, are given below. THIs year, as on previous occasions, those who have gained 75 per cent. or over are ranked Ist rank; 50 to 74 percent., 2nd rank; below 50 per cent., 3rd rank. Those who have done $0 per cent. or over have their values attached. CHARLOTTETOWN, 24th June 1878. To the Trustees and Governors of the Prince of Wales College: GENTLEMEN,—In accordance with instruc- tions, received through your Secretary, I drew up questions for the examination of the stu- dents of the Prince of Wales College on the following subjects: Milton, English Litera- ture, English History, Grecian History and French. In English History and French there were two divisions. 1 am perfectly satistied with the work, and the percentages have reached a high average. The papers of more advanced students in English Literature, Eng- lish History, Greek Hustory and French de- serve special commendation. In the department of Classics 1 examined three classes in Greek and three in Latin. In Greek the text books were the Medea of Euri- pides, and two books of Homer’s Iliad, with Greek Composition. In Latin the authors were Tacitus (the Annals), Virgil and Cicero (two orations) and Latin Compositions. Both in Greek and Latin the translations were made in excellent taste, and with a great deal of correctness. More especially was this the case in the papers on Tacitus and Euripides. The compositions, both in Latin and Greek, showed an excellent acquaintance with the idoms of both languages, and a good know- ledge of the manner of constructing sentences. In regard to the paper in Greek History, an Examiner who did not know the circumstances of the case would assign the first piace to Smallwood. As he had, however, the advan- tages of time and freshness of brain, it would scarcely be fair to adjudicate in relation to the other competitors without taking this into consideration. Of the others,J. P. McLeod is, I think, first—Taylor almost, if not quite, his equal; and Gregor next. Each paper is, in- deed, most creditable to its author. To the Trustees and Governors of the Prince of Wales College: GENTLEMEN,—As examiner in the Mathe- matical department, for the Prince of Wales ‘College, 1 beg to report as follows :—I find, as is usual in such examinations, that there is a considerable difference between the different candidates; but taken, as a whole, I can fairly say that the answers given are exceedingly creditable. Some of the students have earned full marks, as will be seen by the detailed re- sults. The answers given in the Geometrical department are, I think, particularly deserving of praise, as not only have the ordinary pro- positions been, for the most part, done, but also a large number of Candidates have success- fully attempted the exercises set. The papers on Algebra, Trigonometry and Logic, also show good results. GEOMETRY. First Class. Ist Rank: John McKinnon, H. P. Mel- lish 2d Rank: R. E. McKechnie, Robert Craig, John M. McLeod, J. E.
