It is a popular fal- lacy that one must sit up late at night to hear short-wave or must have a specially built “tailor made" set. There i.s hardly a period day or night, atmospheric conditions per- mitting (and they have been very good of late) that it is not pos- sible, with any modern first-class standard radio receiver. to pick up 1. war news bulletin direct flu!) I/andon, Berlin or Paris. short-wave broadcasting is con- lfined to four principal narrow ibanda located approxirnntely at 16. 19, 25, 31 and 49 meters. In the eastern part of the United States at this season of the year, for ex- ample, the 16 meter band is best in the early morning, the 19 meter from noon to early evening. nnd the 25. 31 and 49 meter later. This may vary somewhat in dif- ferent. parts of the country. one thing to remember, wherever you are, 1: to turn on plenty of volume and to tune slowly.
