FHBRU AR & About Warm Milk Special fb otk Considerable has been lately said in} <A rare Price wil) he ' medical journals concerning the value of warm milk as a remedial agent in cortain diseases, An interesting article on the sabjeet lat: ly appeared in the L nidlon Milk Jor nat, in which it i- ateted, on the authority of Dr. Benja min Clarke, that in the East Indies warm milk is used to a great extent as &@ Speenhe tor diarrhea. A pint every four hours will check the most violent diarrhea, stomach ache, incipient cho lera and dysentery. The milk should never be boiled, but enly heated suffi ciently to be agreeably warm, not too hot to drink, Milk whieh has been boiled te unfit tor use. This writer wives several instances of its arresting Uisease, among which is the following. The writer says: “It has pever failed in curiog in six or twelve hours, and 1 have tried it, I should think fifty times 1 have also given it to adying man who had heen subjected to dysentery eight menths, latterly accompanied by one continued diarrhea, and it acted on him like a charm. Ia two days bis iarrh@a was gone ; and in three weeks he became a hale hearty mas ; and now nothing that may hereafter oceur will shake his faith in bot milk.” A writer has also communicated to the Vedical Times and Gazette a statement of the value of milk, in twenty six cases of typhoid fever, in every one of which its great value was apparent. It checks diarrboa, and nourishes and cools the body. Persons sutferiug from diseases need food quite as much as those in health, and much more so in certaia diseases where there is a rapid waste of the system. Frequently all ordinary food, in certain diseases, is rejected by the stomaehb, and even loathed by the patient ; but nature, even beneticent.has turnished food that in ail diseases is benificial—some directly curative. Sueh food is milk. The writer in the journal fast quoted. Dr. Alexander Yale, after giving particular observa- tioas upon the point above mentioned, itg action in checking diarrhea, its nourishing properties and its action in soothing the body, says: “We believe that milk nourishes in fever, promotes sleep, wards off delirium, soothes the intestines, and in fine, is the sine qua- nou in typhod fever,” We have lately tested the value of milk in scarlet fever, and learn that itis now recommended by the medical faculity in all cases of this often very distressing children’s disease. Give all the milk the patient will take, even during the period of gteatestiever, It keeps up the patient, acts well upon the stomach, and is in this way a blessed thing in this sickness. -_-—_- - Chinese Printing. The blocks are ail of the same size, about eight inches by twelve inches, and about a balf an ioch thich. Exch block represents two leaves of four pages of the book, being engraved on both sides. The blocks fora complete work can thus bestowed away io a very small compass, The cost of engraving a page of the wooden block is said to be but lite more than the expense of setting up @ page of Chinese type, and prepar- ing it for the prese. An edition of one copy ean be priated if no more are re- quired, and tbus the expense of kcepiog a large stoek of printed books on hand some of which might eventually have to be sold as waste paper, when they grew out of date or revisions had to be made, as in the case among ourselves, is en- tirely avoided. Any errors or mis- prints that may be discoverei car, as a rule, be corrected on the block with but very littie trouble. A skillful printer can print, by hand, 5,000 leaves of two pages each ina day, using no press or machinery whatever. He sup- plies his own tools, and receives us wages 25 vents a day. The paper or- dinarily used is white, and of the best quality, although a yellowish kind is also made use of, ata reduction of 20 per cent on the selling price. The books are bound in the usual Chinese style and fastened with white silk thread, They present an appearance which satisfies the taste of the most fastidious Dative. = abe — -..__.._- A Great Mexican Pyramid. The pyramid of Cheops is dwarfed by that near Magdalena, Mexico. The Chihuahua “Enterprise” says that it has 5 base of thirteen hundred and fifty feet, and is seven hundred snd fifty feet high, There is a winding roadway from the bottom, leading up an easy grade to the top, wide enough for a ear- riages to pass over, said to be twenty- three miles in length. The outer walls of the roadway are laid in solid mason- ary, huge rocks of granite in rubble work, and the circles are as uniform and the grade of regularas they could be made by our best engineers to-day. The wall is only occasionally exposed, being covered with debris and earth, and in many places the sabuaro and other indigenous places and trees have grown up, giving the pyramid the appearence of & mountain. ——— Go Hawthorns written opinion of Mar- tin Farquhar Tupper was :—“A person for whom I immediately felt a kindoess, and instinctively knew to be fa bore, *« * Tiiked him, and laughed in my sleeve at him, and was utterly weary of him ; for, certainly, he is the ass of Assen, seo _ Kevt Mitts and Matchlees at Boer & 8.
