CHARlHI'FEFOWN Perhaps there is nothing so universally desired today by the people of the world as peace. Thus have been two world were within s querter,of a century. These were fought that the people of the world might remain safe from leer of op- pression. But even since the last armistice, there hsr been nothing but unrest and the threat of future struggles. our hearts and minds are weary of strife, and hunger after the tranquillity which peace will ,bring. At least two false notions con- cerning peace are prevalent in s most practical way among peo- ple today. And it is no wonder that we achieve nothing but un-y rest when we consider the nature of these Ideas. First, it is com- monly held thet a. lasting peace among nations is achieved solely by the heads of governments. It is the ruler of diplomat or poli- tician who must bring about the reign oi rest and concord into our lives. This notion is only partly true. These men must do their part; but nations are com- posed of people like you and me. And the majority of the tssk'is left to us to bring about the much desired peace in our times. I 0 I A country or state is as strong or as good or as pescefui as the individual citizens of which it is composed. It is not the leaders so much who will restore tran- quillity to the world; it is the ordinary person. For all of us set the tone of the nation. Espe- cially is this true in our demo- cratic countries, where we are so free to discuss our views and opinions openly. If the majority of the people are seeking peace for the world ,it will be reflect- ed in the attitude and policies of our leaders. . A second and more basl error commonly held. is that peace con- sists only in a certain tranquillity or order of things external to our- selves. There is peace, so we think. when there is the absence of violent disturbances among peoples or when the strong are attack and enslave the weak. Peace, according to this view, is body bothers us. Each person is free to go his own way undis- turbed. to do anything be pleas- es with the minimum of restric- tions. How common, yet how false this notion is. Peace is not simply a negative thing. ' just the absence of war or the lack of threat or violence. Peace is most positive. It is. in -the words of Augustine. that illn- quillity which is produced by order. This positive view of peace presents s twofold aspect of con- sideretion. It exists in the mind and it exists, at the same time. outside, in the world about us. More essentially, however, it is some”” n; in the minds of men. The order and the calm which we observe about us is only the external expression of what is in our minds and souls. Peace In a city or nation does not happen accidentally; or do war and un- rest. These are simply the logical expression of the minds and women. It is there the unrest or order of the world first resides. Each one of us is capable of doing something, then, for the cause of peace. It means first. that we must restore that order to our own lives. And order al- ways implies a direction, a goal. Every action must fit into the proper plan of our goal In life, which we know in the final analysis is the possession of God. The peace which we desire so much for the world is so much the product of a good life as lived by each individual. The Prince of Peace must be brought back into our own lives, into our It is absolutely necessary, then. that we turn to God to bring us He is the source of all He is without imperfec- tion. snd gives nothing but good gifts. Where He rules there is order, poses and happiness. It is truly said that because God plays such a snail part in the lives of so many people today. there is little room for His love and peace to reside in the world. The chaos and distress ebout us is only an enlarged picture of the ,minds of men. It is because a. man is unhappy. bitter, resent- ful, or malicious that we find the some expressed in ordinary liv- ing. Our Lord, in one of His talks with the Pharisees, reminds us all that it is not what goes into e. man that deflles him. It is rather from his heart and mind that all manner of crime and sin arise. Where our treasure is. we were told, there is our heart also. When God is driven from the lives of men, then also the joy and peace and security, which are His greatest gifts, are like- wise taken away. What we are inside is then reflected in what we do. When men are lacking in that harmony of relationship with God, their actions can pro- duce only hatred, prejudice and unrest. Peace, then, will be the reward of a world dedicated to God. As He begins to dominate our lives more and more, so, too, will His in this way. will the of order be restored world. Words of criticism and complaint do not solve the wounds of unrest; but 9. good life is the positive remedy gradually, tranquillity to the whole minds, if His reign is to be re- flected about us.
