(April 1 ‘88 ——— A telegram from Ottawa stating that the Dominion Government had received advices from the Australian Governments urging negotiations for closer trade relations be- tween Australia and Canada is arousing comment in Great Britain. The Daily Chronicle voices the general sentiment in an editorial wherein it rejvices at the movement as distinctly tending to imperial unity, and says if both the colonies wish to enter into such negotiations it is quite safe to assume that the Imperial Government will gladly give the required assistance. The Australian invitation is opportune, seeing the possibility of relation by the United States. It hopes the various parts of the Empire will ultimately recognize the wisdom of forming themselves into a sort of Zoilverein Empire, which could afford to adoptthe American free trade policy between the varivus States, and protection in dealings with other countries.
