From all appearances we will soon cease to exist as a separste Colony. In view of the recent despatches of the Coiouial Minister, in which he informs us that Her Majesty’s Gov- ‘* will soon cease to trouble itself” about our affairs, it will require all the wisdom of the Legislature to avoid having the Colony pitched bodily into Confederation. It will require, too, the united action of the people to avoid such a calamity, for it is well knowa that, as @ member of the Confederacy, we wiil have forced from us, twice told, the amount sf taxes we muw pay. At present ‘he sympathy of the Catholics is alienated from the Govern- ment, because of its illiberal policy om the School question, In granting # smail sum ef money 'a aid of Catholic schoo's, the Goveru- ment would “ semove from the sphere of poli- ticul discussion a perplexing question which has cavsed ill-feeling in the past,” and which is likely to do so in the futare, Would it not be good policy on the part of the Government te grant the sum asked for by Mr. Howlan, and thus secure united action on the part of ernment to, shews how little dependence is to be placed in the great “ Liberal Party ’’ of this Isiand. There is no class of people on the! leland who bave suffered more for this Party) than the Catholics. Money has, to the ex-) tent of hundreds of pounds, been spent ; hard | no other grounds than that we are Catholics. If the Catholic people of this Island are satisfied with this state of things, we are much surprised. For we believe Bishop Meclotyre’s labors in aid of Education would | not go unrewarded in any House of Assembly | in the other Colontes, from Vancouver to New foundland. And all thvse Catholics who thought we opposed the present Government too strongly, will now koow bow far we were wrong in our estimate of them. The member for Casoumpec, Herbert Bell, Esq , and George Sinclair, Eeq , for Egmont Bay, were, we underetand, among the loudest in their denunciations of the Bishop's Me- morial. These gentlemen are like the frog in the fable, very much poffed up with their own importance. We never expected any- thing better from them, mmasmuch as they do not represent the viewe of the mujority of the people of their Districts. The people of Tignieb and Egmont Baywill now know how to estimate the asservations and *‘selt eawder’’ of theee very liberal and high-minded gentle- anea. (n conclusion, we do not believe the Protest- tante of thie Island are fairly represented by such worthies as the Mesers Laird, Siocleir, Cameren, McNeill, Bell, Coles, Calibeck, and McMillan, No; we have a much higher opinion of owr Protestant fellow-colomiste ; we know too muck of their hospitality. in- telligence, sense of justice and fuir play, VELOCIPEDE COMPETITION.
