The Harris Memorial Gallery has been the scene of very intcrestln! activity during the past two weeks. The exhibition of some forty by Mabel McCu11och (Mrs. D. M. Gass) last week, was one that commanded a great deal of respect. It is a very interefltllli experience to be able to follow the work of a local artist who is still studying, and to note progress or changes in manner and finish in the painting. Mrs. Gass is a pupil of Professor Dumont of New York, who special- izes in interpretations of nature. And much of Mrs. Gasss work is a fine example of the painting of sunshine—- sometimes of brilliant sunlight shining directly on the object, sometimes of the transmit- ted light‘ which brings out many beautiful slizidcs of green in‘ the foliage. ligent painting of transmitted light —1s to me one of the most appeal- ing paintings in the exhibition. It is in no sense unfinished yet it gives the impression somehow of a very lovely fragment-a bit of stream rushing forth to somewhere from safe cool green caverns of shrubbery. No. 20, lflms, is perhaps the most outstanding composit?" with its huge svwreping trees, its patches of direct sunlight in the foreground, and the hills in the distance, beautifully painted and repeating with less intensity, the colouring of , the flowers in the foreground. There are mziziy Cape Breton! scenes and, in contrast to the bril- liant greens of the Margaree Val- lcy in midsuiiiirior, are several local scones. One is of Holland Cove in which the deep grecn of the trees and the greenish blue of a canoe give quality to the exquisite colour- in; of the red earth. Mrs. Gusss portraits are all very iutcrcstiiig and her character sketch of an old lady, although un- finished is unusually fine. There are a number of other scenes, many flower studies and miniatures in this splendid collec- tion. The Women's Music club, ch“. lottetown has begun its 1936-37 sea- son. The program for the year 1| a very unusual and rather difficult one including such interesting sub- Jects as a Debate-Old Masters versus New, the Influence of Na- ttonaiity On Composers, "In a Per- sian Garden," Present Day Opera, and Music Inspired by shakes. pcarian Poetry. By Guardian's Special Wire) TORONTO, Nov. ill-Upon the authenticity of a holograph will rested the decision tonight; in a legal struggle for the fortune Am- brose J. Small left bdiind when he vanished Dec. 2, 1929 from his Grand Opera House in Toronto and never was seen again, dead or alive. - The will, dated Sept. d, 1903 and leaving an estate in excess of $1,- 000,000 to his widow, was brought into non-jury assize court before Mr. Justice Nicol Jeffrey today. It was declared a forgery. Three ‘Toronto high school teachers of writing swore they believed Small never wrote 1t. Smalls widow, who inherited the estate when the holograph will was probated and her husband de- clared legally dead, died a year ago, leaving an estate of $2,000,000 to Roman Catholic organizations in Toronto. An attempt by Smalls sister Mary Florence to upset lvirs. Smalrs will rested squarely upon the decision regarding the 33-year- old will probatcd following Smalls disappearance, it was asserted by Mr. Justice Jeffrey. "The case stands or frills on the authenticity of the will and, if it is his signature to it, was his death brought about by violence, either by lvlrs. Small or by Mrs. Small in collusion with other peo- ples," commented the Justice. Evidence of a plot to murder the wealthy Small had been heard pre- vioiisiy. Held ll lira ltires (C.
