Falsehoods, like quitch grass, take a deal Last winter a London daily /gave currency to an assertion that the land jalong the line adopted by the C»nadian | Pacitic Railway was of poor quality. The | Dominop Governa ent, ever watchful of its | interests, and deter mined that no untruthful | insinvation s should damaye Canada’s great | undertaking, promptly refuted this assertion by « flicially etating that the Surveyor-Gene- ral reported that the average of good agri- cultural land is quite as high along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway as in any other district in the Northwest. An indi- vidual, writing to the Field, under the bame “ot ** Manitoba,” resuscitates, and must have the credit’ cf vastly im- proving upon the originel falsehood; for he says ‘it is notorious the Cana- dian Pacific Railway runs through about the worst seciion of country they could find; and the result is they have already refused |5 ,000,000 acres lying alongside their line.” To the first assertion, the oflicial statement referred to above is a sufficient answer, backed up as that answer is by anenormous mass of independent testimony. The Canadian Pacific Railway has the inestimable advantage of not being ‘by my spirit, saith the Lord. A hundred if not a thousand cases could be pointed to show those who needed in- vitation or warning received no personal word of loving counsel or of earnest entreaty from christian disciples who were with them or who passed them by, but who lacked the zeal to speak the needed word. If a hotel is on fire in the dead of night, the servants have more need of zeal than of tact in their efforts at rousing the sleeping guests. The more tact they have the better at such a time, as at every other; but the most awkward and bungling servant in that house ought not to hold back from giving the alarm because he might fail of doing it gracefully. Better illustrations of over zealin personal pleadings for Christ would probably be found to have won far more souls to their Savior than can be counted asthe result of all the prudent holding back, from lack of tact on the part of all. the Christian Disciples in our ac- quaintance.—S.
