As will be seen from the " returns in other columns the Laurier Government was very strongly sustained at the polls yesterday, especially in the eastern half of the Dominion where the 'odds in' their 'favor are quite overwhelming. Ontario ap- pears to have been pretty evenly divided, and Manitoba has gone strongly Conser- vative. ‘From British Columbia we have no returns this morning. , A feature of the Opposition reverse has been the defeat of Sir Charles Tupper and his two principal lieutcnants, Hon. Messrs Foster and Hugh John Macdonald. No doubt either of them can readily find a seat in some other constituency than those which have rejected them and they will probably take this course. * The government appears not only t6 have carried the country, but the individ ‘l majorities. The Premiers majority in Quebec East is some 2500, while Sir Louis | Davies, Hon. Messrs Blair, Tarte, Mulock to the good. It is in the nature of things that many good men have been defeated, evidently determined to give the Govern- ment a second term of power, and that result had been to many minds a forgone conclusion before the votes were counted. For a. long time the centre of population in the United States was steadily moving Westward. In 1790 it was some 23 miles east of Baltimore a little north of the 39th parallel of latitude. In its march the “center” has moved one, always keeping ` near that line and at each successive cen- sus was found to be from 36to 81 miles ` farther west. In the 100 years from 1790 to l@0 it had moved wdstward 5% miles and at the latter date was located Z) miles east of Columbus, Indiana. There the westward march of the “centre” seems -to have stopped. The result of the census recently completed is said' to indicate little or no change. .___- , THE Guaumnx is spgcially indebted to Superintendent James and his staff of thc *Anglo American Telegraph Company for ` every facility in receiving the neivs of the elections yesterday throughout the Dom- i sw H- vi inion.
