PANTHERS ARE 85.7% by Mickey Place We suppose we SHOULD be ecstatic over the fact that Panther teams over the weekend won 6 out of the 7 matches in which they participated. That is 85.7 %! Our elation is somewhat dimmed, how- ever, in our disappoint- ment over the loss of the important soccer playoff game in which we were edged by highly favoured, eventual tmrnament winner, nationally ranked Saint Mary's. Those who saw the game in Fredericton tell us that our boys held a territorial edge throughout but were unable to bring off the real object of the game. . . putting the ball into their opponent's net. Coach Vincie Mulligan can take great encourage- ment from the season's play and can really advise fans "Wait until next year" for he will have all bit one or two players back. Mitch Murphy and high scorer Gary Polenz were picked as All-Conference players while Scott Neill, Andy Cameron, and Frank Strohmeier fell short of this honour. . . all by just one vote. The hockey Panthers, also playing in Fredericton, posted two good wins and, in so doing, ran their season's league record to 3—1 which is good enough to earn them a share of first place in their division. Saturday night they bested the UNB Red Devils 4—1 with our markers coming from Norman Beck, Mike Ready, Garth Arsenault, and Trevor Crawford. Sunday was Gary Trainor's day as the fast and shifty forward scored a hat trick with three goals . . r," :_,. " ‘ ‘tv' , antic ' «i Jim AK HOUSE mm-.-mrmcam , V, . We'll have to credit Trevor with superb condition as he played soccer Saturday after- noon (No substitution, mind you!) and managed to score in both hockey games! The team gets something like a rest this weekend ( A rest with Jack Hynes coaching? Mickey don't be ridiculous) as they play but one game . . against Acadia on Sunday in Wolfville. On Tuesday the national champion U. de Moncton will be at the Forum. Les Aigles Bleu, highly touted for a repeat, have found the going tough having lost league games to Memorial and St. F.X.. The Panthers hope to add to their frustration. Our basket- ball Pantherettes had an easy time of it in two games against an inexperienced Saint Thomas team who got little encouragement in their plans to have a league entry in the near future. On Saturday night it was a 102—27 romp for the Lady panthers as Velvet Charters led the way with 20 points and in the Sunday mismatch it was 89-9 as Colleen Rossiter was high with 20. We hope the girls are as good as they looked as they will face stiff competition in this weekend's Tip Off tournament at Acadia“: Coach George Morrison gave his bench players a lot of action against the Tomnies and they all performed well. The Basketball Panthers had a most encouraging start as they took a pair of exhibition games against a highly rated University MOMJAY NIGHT A is srubm ~ “D” HIGH! Those of you who might need it should hit the books! of Maine, Machias team, that had nosed out Mt. Allison on Friday. There has been a lot of talk and curiosity about Dave Nutbrovm's boys and they certainly lived up to the expectation that they will provide a lot of entertainment this year. Both teams were fast and we don't think we have ever seen games in which so many participants Were sent sprawling. Differing from recent Panther teams, the pace did not slacken when substitutions were made. This team has lots of depth and there was no attempt to slow down the action when some players were off the floor. Coach Nut-brown will have quite a time deciding which players to use. in some situations. This, we are sure will be a pleasure for him. In Saturday's game, which we won 89-85, the. much heralded Chris Sumner led the way with 21, while on Sunday graceful Curtis Brown (he moves like a ballet dancer) was high with 20. Maine had a big player, about topped 250 pounds who camped under the basket— ball net in much the same way that Phil Esposito used to do around a hockey net. It seared very funny to contrast him with Skeeter Mower who, attempting to shoot over his head, had to go from outside. This weekend the team travels to Acadia for the Tip—Off tournament. They are not scheduled for play here until the let.
