De a eee od - Baad THE DAILY EXAMINER. . , THE DAILY EXAMINER. A Broken Party. Tue Grit party in Cenads has literally gone to wreck and ruin. [ts unCanadian and unBritish policy forced its ablest and best man to withdrawn from it previous to | the last election. Almost every politician of ability belonging to it is either dead or gone over to the Conservatives. The last straw is furnished by the election of the Conservative candidate for Marquette by acclamation, In all the wide extent of territory from Lake Snperior to the Pacific Ocean there is not now » single parlia- mentary supporter of the Opposition. There never was in Canada or in any other country a political party so utterly dis- credited. The Nemesis of its rascalities has overtaken it. It fate is a lesson and warn- ing for our politicians of the future. To political corruption it added hypocrisy. It appealed to the selfishness and greed of Canadians, and would have sacrificed British institutions and imposed heavy discriminating duties upon goods from Great Britain, in order that Cana- dians might buy off the commercial hostility of the United States, and make more money by dealing more freely with Boston, New York, Chicago and San Fran- cisco. While its leaders were coquetting with the politicians of Washington, they attempted to deceive the people of Canada by protestations that they ‘* meant nothing wrong.” Immersed in Mercierism, they canted about political righteousness and the *elevation of the standard of political morality.” Their utter abandonment has proved that the intelligent people of Can- ada will not tolerste in any party of poli- ticians the character and tactics of the blackleg and the hypocrite. We sincerely hope that it will have a wholesome effect upon our public meu of every stripe. _— om. Creps and Prespects. A agactovs rain has dispelled the anxiety of our farmers residing west of Bradalbane. But those living at the east- ward are still upon ‘* the rough and ragged edge.” In this section, there have been one or two light showers—enough to wet the leaves, but not the ground ; and the crops eastward are beginning to suffer, particularly where the soil is light and poor. Turnips are not growing ; and potatoes are infested with bugs. The farmer has, in the loss of time and the expense to which he his now subjected by reason of the bugs, ample cause to regret his scoffs at ‘‘Donald Ferguson's Bug Act.” Had this Act been enforced, and not laughed at, our farmaers might now be rest- ing or profitably employing their time, in- stead of picking bugs, with aching backs, in the heat of summer, or scattering abroad the poisonous paris green. In this connec- tion, we may mention an apparatus, con- structed and used by Mr. Isaac Howatt, of Cape Traverse. It is referred to by the Farmer as follows : “He took a pair of wheels and axle, made them into a light cart and upon this he plac- eda barrel. From the bottom of the latter he led two pieces of lead piping, one from either side, and by means of short pieces of rubber tubing he fastened perforated nozzles. One sits in front to drive, while a second person sits on behind and guides the —enen, so that two rows are spray- at one time. The shaking of the cart is sufficient, we understand, to keep the heavy em green in suspension. By this apparatus rom two to three acres can be gone over in a day. This is perhaps as convenient, cheap and expeditious a way of spraying the potatoes for the extermination of the potato bug as can be devised, and we would recommend our farmer friends to build a similar contrivance.” The oat crop is reported rather short, aud except where grown ou very good land can hardly yield the average, unless a good rain should come within « few days. Wheat prospects are better, for wheat has beén sown upon better land and is not so easily injured by drought. But, altogether, the prospect of a full crop this year is by no means sure ; and business men ag well as farmers will do well if they are conser- vative and prndent. In the Upper Provinces it was complain- ed that there was too much rain. But within the last fortnight the weather has been as favorable as possible for the grow- ing crops, and the same remark may be made concerning the weather in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Professor Saunders sends excellent reports from the Northwest. Though P. E. Island and Cape Breton may be somewhat short of the usual harvest, it seems probable that the harvest of Canada, as a whole, will be abundant. om + —The most popuiar Ameriean poet now living is probably Will Carleton, whose ad- mirers are to be found wherever the Eng- lish language is spoken. The secret of this popularity is doubtless to be found in his adherence to the principle that there is no thought so great that it cannot be re- solved into elements easily understood by the average human intellect. ‘It should be the work of a poet,” he says, ‘not to make plain thought or lack of thought complex and difficult of being understood, but to simplify and interpret nature and art to his readers ; not to produce a series of rhymed riddles and enigmas, but epics, dramas, or lyrics such as the ‘human race Relief for St. John’s. T. C. James, Treas. The Scottish Gathering. Interesting letters are being received by the Pioneer Committee. These show the great interest taken in the commemorative feature of this year’s celebration, as an ex tract or two from the letters will show : ** My brother has taken all the trinkets that | had of any consequence for the gathering of the Clans. Amongst them you will find a shina cup that has been in our family for over 200 years, and an iron vice, 160 years old.” Here is another extract: ‘* Your request for articles to aid in carrying out your celebration in honor of the Scottish Pioneers is an appeal such as must stir the blood in the veins of all who are of Scottish descent.” And yet another: ‘* Although highly approving of the commemorative feature of the gathering, | regret that | can do nothing to advance it. The only thing that occurs to me at present is George Buchanan's Poems in Latin, dated 1676, printed at Amsterdam. Can you not re- produce the creepy-stool, a bicker for brose, etc.” Did space permit we might add many others equally interesting, to show the enthusiasm manifested through- out the country in the pioneer celebration Personal. A famoue Duchess in London recently went through the ordeal of having a dress made on her own figure. The great event of the Convention is less the nomination of the President than the final defeat of Mr. Blaine. At the same moment he loses his chanee for the Presi- dency and his public career ends. Hight years agu he was nominated amid immense acclamation, but also immense doubt. The next morning a breach in the party began, and it deepened and widened until he was defeated at the polls. It was a peculiar defeat, becavse it was personal and not political ; that is to say, it was determined not by a change of politicaPviews upon the part cf the Republican dissidents, but by a conviction that he had practically abused offcial opportunities. A nomination and an election eight years later he might have regarded as a reversal of that verdict. But now he will appear in our history as the man whé broke the line ef successful Re- publican candidates tor the Presidency which began with Abraham Linculn and was resumed after Blaine’s defeat.
