April 29th, 1918. Dear Father and Mother.-Just a few lines to let you know that we ar- rived safely in England. About the trip l am not allowed to say anything, not even the port we landed at. The water was calm. with the ,ex- ception of a few days, and then it ver- tainly was rough. The troops were not allowed on deck. During the nights the ship was in total darkness, the idea being to keep her hid from the subs. There were about 15,000 soldiers going across with us. lt was surely an able body of men. Well, 'England is a beautiful coun- try. No mind could ever imagine that it was so pretty. it is no wonder that the Englishmen fight so hard. ilidinu on the train one comes to a city about every 20 minutes, and all large sized. There -is real summer weather here and it was quite it surprise-to us t.i see the grass up about a foot. and the cropping all done. The grain is up three inches. Vegetables ami ilowur gardens are out ln the pink of beauty. The English people greatly appreci- ate the Canadian soldiers, accortlingly as we marched through the streets. they were lined up on both sides giv- ing us a hearty welcome. We are camping at 11 placed called l-‘rr-nsliani Pond in the County of Surrey, and are quarantined in here again, 'l`liat seems to be our luck, but i think it is only for ten days. We are then going to iliainshot camp. James T. l-Iutt laid down his life for those prin- ciples of right that we have been taught to believe are inseparable from justice and righteousness and while his aged father sitting lonely by his empty hearthstonc will mourn for the strong beloved son that he'll welcome back no more, still intthe realization of a duty iiobly done there will ever he for his people n solace and u heart balm. “i.addie, beloved laddie!
