But we are justified | | man ; ee a : Vay UI : i Tun @S roOuowWw; in saying that it is largely due to the re-| moval of the Custems line which separated us from the sister Provinces, and to the stream of competition which flowed inte the Island from No doubt this has been hard used only to the eid thereupon Montreal and other cities. on our merchauats, channels of trace, and it has also been hard upon dealers the owing to the exceptional held out many cases, ordered larger supplies than they could sell or pay for. But, other hand, it has been proportionally easy on our farmers, and on men of fixed incomes or salaries—in brief upen the Province at in country who, inducements rummer in by persistent dr large. Nor do we think it likely that the prices of the goods we import most largely will ever again be raised to the ante-con- federation standard. Under the National Policy tariff the staple artictes of import— melasses, the coarser sugars etc. ,—all those goeds for the supply of which we are de- pendent upon foreign countries— are admit- ted upon easier terms as regards duty then they were under the old tariff. And ex- perience, has proved that the duties impesed upon coal, flour, cornmeal! and other necessaries of life, which are produced both in Canada and in foreign countries, have no effect whatever upon the prites. With the burden of the Pacific Railway removed, there will be ne necessity for any increase of the tariff, aud with new factorics, and refineries springing up all over the Dominion, active competition sured, and prices are more likely than to rise. But while, on financial score, there is no ood for discontent with Canada, which our unpatrictic contem- porayies are striving to eugender, several good grounds of discontent lave been removed by the Union. First, there is the removal of the leasehold tenure. Clearly we owe thatto Confederation. Had the passage of the ‘‘Land Purchase Act’’ been dependent upon Downing Street, and had we not had $-00,000 placed at our coni- mand by the Vominion Gevernment, our farmers wouki almost certainly be still largely subject to absentee landlords. Then there is tie stricter and juster admin- istration of tie Custem House, the vast improvement made in our postal service, with many o*her substantial advantages now mills will be en- to fall the cause which have flowed directly from Con- federation. These are not due te good}, seasons and flourishing crops. These are political benefits, traceable directly tu the Union. We are aware that it is usually net hard to make people discentented; and the editors of tne J/erald and Putriot doubtiess thought they would have ‘‘an easy time cf it.” They will, however, find it somewhat difficult to overceine the logic »f the facts we have adduced. Let them show good and true grounds for discontent, with the same definiteness that we have shown the material advantages obtained by the Island through the unien, and we shali oppose no further obstacle to their unenviable task, on the! 396,860 97.930 : " ; ; ; 385,607 187% ea ‘ ; ; a Le i880 : ; : 4 50.000 arrived at 457 This result has been by economy general progress ofqnanagement and by the of business; and the road is in as gocd order as ever it was. ‘he ease of the In- tere olonial Railway is still stronger.
