VicTORY! Liberal-Conservative Party have | THe gained another great victory. The Pe pie] have another ee mndid Administration of Sir John of Canada paid tribute to the A. Macdonald. they have renewed tiie lease of oftice they gave to Sir John eight long Every member of Sir years age John’s Cabinet has been elected ; and the Government will be supported in Parlia ment by a. majority of thirty to forty. Every Province in Canada contributes to the majority except Prince Edward Island. We deeply regret that the Laberal-Con- servative candidates in this Province are smong the fallen. It is needless to say that the results were unexpected. Our triend success in each of the their the event is over, were contident of Counties ; but the causes of disap pointment are, now that They had to work against } i c1TrTe tO GOsire not far to seek. = the tendency of the electorate Ss ike officials and change merely for the of change They had to deal with all the employes of the Government who had per sonal grievances of which to complain. They had against them many disappointed office seekers. They had to cope with an opposition driven to desperation by a long years of ex- had to fight rmous volume of lies and series of defeats and by many clusion from office. They against an en slanders. These antagonistic forces were materially aided in Queen’s County by an incomplete list of voters. At the revision of last yeai the Oppositionists were awake to the un- portance of having the name of every Grit voter placed on the list, and the name of every Liberal-Conservative voter struck off; and, aided by a partisan Revising Officer, they had it well-nigh their own way. The consequence was that about four hundred votes are estimated to have been lost to the Conservative candidates for(Jueen’s County. With all these advantages the Grits were exerted themselves to Their party drummers were early at work, and took no rest until the not satisfied. They the utmost. horses and sleighs an polls were closed. We give them credit for every legitimate eifort they put forth. But we greatly fear that they supplemented their legitimate efforts, by efforts which are not lawful. Wespeak not now of the com- of intimidation, but of the darker money and paratively venial offences personation and treating ; sin of bribery by means of goods. As to this alleged offence, we await further developments. We care not to charge against opponents—even those who have not scrupled to resort to every con- temptible shift and subterfuge and dodge known to electioneering tacticians —- the heinous crime of bribery. We will only remark that the alleged fact that numbers of voterswho were known to have demanded money from the Liberal-Conservatives and been refused, were seen shortly afterwards to drive off with the Grit canvassers, seems to be a good and sufficient reason for de- manding the investigation into the matter which, in such a case, is due to the Liberal- Conservative Party, to the county at large, There should be no seruple, no hesitation about the matter. The Liberal-Conservative Party fought the and to Justice itself. battle fairly and squarely; and—apart from the fact that many of their leading men were openly insulted at the polls by being com- pelled to take the bribery oath—they should see to it that Davies take country, gained by means unfair and foul. The result of the and Welsh do not positions, in the Parliament of our contest here cannot failto have an effect prejudicial to this It will naturally be inferred by the people of Ontario and Quebec that we Subway ; and their representatives in Parliament are not unlikely to oppose the expenditure of public Province. are not at all anxious about the money upon that great project. Heretofore the Government have met the just demands of our Provincial Govern- ment in a prompt and generous spirit ; but they will probably not feel inclined to risk defeat in Parliament by making grants for the sake of a people who give them no thanks and show no sign of appreciation. We have no doubt that Sir John and Sir Charles and their associates will endeavor, as heretofore, to treat the Island fairly ; but they will necessarily be hampered in their efforts, because they have no sentatives from the Island to support their lid Grit contingent to repre- measures, and a oppose them. Our telegraphic correspon- dent says thatthe Island has committed political suicide ; and though his metaphor is more notable for its strength than for its correctness, the idea he conveys is about right. But, while we deplore the result in this Province, we must—looking to the good of Canada at large—rejoice that the Govern- ment has sustained; and that capable, honest and experienced statesmen will con- tinue in charge of the public Canada. it was during the session of 1879 or 1880, we think, that Sir John spoke, in a humor- ous way, of being in power.in 1890. His but his new words were ridiculed then ; Ivase extends tu 182 | affairs of ‘SpleiitVilary GOVERNMENT SUSTAINED, A RC MAJORITY, FORTY-FIVE All the Members Kiecied. - ——— cee Repeal Eilled ! DALHOUSIE MOURNS. eee A PRIVATE DESPATCH from Sir John Mac- donald says that Sir John is sustained by a majority of forty-five. {[SpectaAL DespatcuEs TO Tur EXAMINER, } Harirax, Feb. 23. Yesterday's fight was a tremendous but the Grits were ignominiously beaten. The Government of Sir John A. Maedonald has been sustained with a good working majority of between thirty and forty. Halifax succeeded in overcoming the | twelve hundred repeal majority of last June, and elected Kenny at the head of the poll, with a keen race for second place between Jones and Stairs—probably favor ing the latter. In Nova Scotia the Government also re- Annapolis, Digby and probably Queen’s ; but lost Kings, Richmond, Yar- mouth and Lunenburg. They also held their own in the other counties, and had a majority of 700 in Cumberland ; of 600 in Colchester; of 590 in Pictou and 500 in Inverness. In New Brunswick the Government lost St. John, but gained Charlotte, Sunbury, and probably Queen’s. Hon. Peter Mitchell has elected. There is universal regret island’s political suicide. The race and revenge cry has materially reduced the majority in Quebec. Some splendid victories were, however, won by the Government, they carrying all the great centres of intelligence and the cities. Ottawa gives the Government a majority of 800 and Montreal a majority of 1,000. There were also big Government ma- jorities in Toronto, Pamiltom, and other places; and Kingston has been redeemed. Anglin has been badly beaten. Blake, Mills and MacKenzie only got in by the skin of their teeth. Every cabinet minister and Conservative has been re-elected. Halifax Grits are terribly disgusted, They have lost many thousands of dollars. Repe il is as dead as Julius Cvesar. Hautray, Feb. 23. ESTORED TO HEALTH. faith cure was reported from Banksville, a mining town two miles southwest of Pittsburg, Pa., the 17th. For several years Maggie Beadling, the sixteen- year old daughter of a coal miner, has been bedridden. Frequently of late she has laid in a trance or comatose state for days, and when she would retuan to consciousness she would tell her friends that she had been to heaven. In proof of this she told the names and described the appearance of relatives who had died before she was born, A remarkable were alive. In October and November last she lay in quantity of liquid food, administered: to her by attendants. When she revived she said she had received divine communication tothe effect that at 2 p. m., on Feb. 17, she would be raised from an invalid’s bed and entirely restored to health. That afternedn her father’s house was filled with friends and nage tes, who waited in silence and awe for the predieted manifestation. The girl's face wore an expression of joy, and seemed | to grow in beauty as the hour drew near. Exactly at the stroke of 2 she arose from her chair with her crutches room, those present. and she jumped about like a chil Tie see her. Her parents wept with joy, and ihe greatest excitement prevailed. Miss! Beadling was seen by several reporters, and | she pronounced herself well. Ii is the be- lief among neighbors that the young lady was sincere in her claim of her recovery is regarded as a miracle. --e@>- 2 The Bicy ele in War. ITS ADVANTAGES OVER THE HORSE-—BICYCLE CORPS IN THE FRENCH ARMY. Now that the balloon has received a de- finite status in the British army, it is not unlikely the War Office will turn its atten- tion to the claims of the bicyele. Regular organized bicycle corps are attached to the French army, and in recent manceuyres have done all such work as_ the carrying of orders and despatches, and done it with more speed and punctuality than mounted troopers. In some cases bicyclists: have ac- complished journeys of 50 and 60 miles a day for six or eight days in succession. At this rate a bicyclist is not only more éiii- cient than a horsemn, but cheaper; fors-a bicycle costs originally less than. half the cost of a cavalry horse, wears as long, is far less expensive to keep, and is much less likely to be put hors de combat by a stray bullet. -—-——— — -_—_—--2-< eo a@—o— o— Value of Some London Land. it has been ascertained, with regard to the Imperial Institute, that the site of about five acres recently secured for the uew Admiralty and War offices, is valued at £820,000 or rather over $800,000 - per acre; that now vacant in Charles street, opposic the India office, is less than an ;acre, and would cost at least $625,000; probably another acve might be secured by private contract, so that the value of a limited site in this position would not be less than $1,250,000.
