Tips given to Pullman car porters by sovernment employees while perform- ing official duties are considered legiti- mate charges against Uncle Sam. They are the only tips which are accorded this distinction. This interesting fact has just been gleaned through the dis- play by a government official of a bill of expenses which he intended to pre- sent for a recent trip which he made in the service of the government. He exhibited the statement as an evidence of the close manner in which the gov- ernment did business. He had to pre- sent a receipt for every expenditure made, even a receipt from the Pullman car conductor for his berth. The only item for which there was no receipt was “Tips, 50 cents.” When asked what the tips were for, the offi- cer said: “They were tips which 1 gave to Pullman car porters. The govern- ment allows those, but they are the only tips which are allowed. If I tip the waiter at my hotel or the man who carries my bag, the tip comes out of my pocket, but the tipping of Pullman car porters, a quarter for each journey made on a sleeper, is such a recognized custom that the item for such tips is always allowed by the government to otticers when traveling on government business.”—New Orleans Times-Demo- crat. A young farmer boy who lives ont on the bottoms wasin the office the other day and told us“that Pete Tyson climbed a corn stalk the other day to see how the corn was gettiag along »nd vow the stalk is growing up faster than he can climbdown. He is entirely out of sight. Three men with axes have under- taken to cut the stalk and so save him from starvation, but it growed so fast that they couldo’t whacktwice in the same place. Pete is living on nothing bui raw corn, and has already thrown down over tour bushels of cobs.” Cueese Factory Proposep.— On Tues- day the 3rd inst., a meeting of the people cf Red Point aud vicinity was held to con- sider tbe advisability of building a cheese fac‘ory at or near that place. There has recently been some talk about the possi bility of annexing Jamaica, Bermuda and ihe Babamas to Canada, and consequently the three illustrated articles pubs lished by our national magazine this month are opportune and of tremendous interest. Professor Shortt has the leading place in the issue witha very clever aud broad~minded article en- titled “In D2fence of Millioaaires,” the title being fully explanatory of the con- tents, Toe sporting season brings forth an article on Rutled Grouse (Periridge), and a promise of six articles onthe Big Game of Canada. Charles Lewis Shaw, Joanna E. Wood and Erle Cromer give the closing instalments of their contributions, and tbe next number of the magazine will likely appear with an entirely new cast of characters. The Nevember number, by the way, will open the fourteenth Volumes Onlv one other Canadian magazine ever attained this age.
