W Insects destructive to vegetation are be. coming very numerous. Nearly all the apple trees in the country have been destroyed by the cactus, popularly known as the biirlrloiise. Currant and gooscllerry bushes are yearly 11e- nuded of their leuvcs,—aiid even the iorcst trees do not escape the deprediitions of vora- cious creatures of various forms. A few days ago the writer observed, in ii. lawn which liiid been laid dowti iiiaily years ago, large patches of grass completely killed. On walking over these spots, the ground yielded to the pressure of tho ieet. and on examination it was found that the tort had been undermined and could be lifted all like a carpet. The roots of the grass are wholly destroyed. The (lei-rtstulor is a grab varying in size from a halt inch to one and a hall" inches in length. The large ones are nearly half 1m inch in diameter. "The head is brown. and armed with powerful llorilyjaws, the body is nearly white, except at the tail where it is brown. It is provided with six strong legs, and on turning up the grass It is seen rolled up in the form of a crescent. This insect, we believe, is the grub ofa beetle. ot the same family as that known in England as the Oak-tree (pliyllopli- ya qiiei‘ri'ntt.) In this Island it is sometimes called the Sole-bug. and is usually found at the roots of ciibbi ge plants, which they greed- ily destroy. The grabs of this kiiid ilo not conilne themselves to the roots of cabbage or ot grass. The roots of wheat aiidotlier grains, iliid even oi young trees, are sometimes des- troyed bl them. It is related that in England about seventy years ago, a farmer iliid his man gathered eighty bushels of the parent beetles! 11 It is to be hoped that our Island is not doomed to endure 1!. visit from these in— iiatiable insects. Unfortunately. ve have but few iiisectivcroiis birds. iiiiil while the insects are increasing, the birds are disappearing.— Islander. GoiiHv's Lanv's IIUUlv i'br September has been received. The steel—plate engraving, "The Cottage Home," is very nice, and well worth the price of the book. The wood cut, “The Dead Bride." is also ve y good. The fashion plate looks charming. The piece of music in this number is arrangedl'or the piano. The Literature is very spicy.
