As to the exhibition, which opened Feb. 23 and will close March 30, 'I‘l-IE TIMES says: “ Quality rather than quantity is the note of the exhibition. Thus, there are only 55 pictures, but they are all of the first importance. One circumstance alone would make the exhibition memorable-no fewer than 13 plcturees are lent from America. The migration of 18th century portraits across the Atlan- tic is a constant theme of regret; is is very seldom indeed that one of them comes back- J. Pierpont Morgan lent Clainsborough's ‘Miss Linley and Brothcr,' members ofthe family with which the artist had his happiest relations, human and professional, and J. E.-Widener his ‘Mrs. Graham’--presumably the subject of the 'Houseniaid' sketch lil the National Gallery. _Prom -Knole Lord Sackville lends Gains- borough’s ‘Third Duke of' Dorset'; Lord spencer sent three first-class examples of ` Reynold’s 'Lavinia, Viscountess Althoi"p." 'Lady Anne Bingham] apd 'Richard Burke’; and one of Laurence’s finest works, ‘Miss Conyngham with Dog,' is lent by Mrs. Stotesbury. One aim has been to secure pictures not merely of, but relative to, the period. Thus, there is a portrait of ‘William Beck- ford,’ the cultural soul of the 18th century, by Reynolds, and London views from Richmond House, one' of its cultural centres by Canalettc." -*__ |UlIURCH BUS MASTERS _ TROUBLE WITH DEVIL ‘(By The Canadian Press) + _'.1 sfr.~:...i...<;s sr: /6| fi’ -11', Y Central ... .|l]‘.‘5’y,|i24\/:|l25l,/;'- North Am Co ..|87\,g| 871/4 $71/_._ __ Packard Motors ...` | 1114 Para Publix »i11,l| 40% 4110 - Pen Railroad 0211;., _ Phil Petroleum 1-ll,g,| _ Pub s or N. P. Watson Currie) Rev. Alexander ltoulston, 1885-1891 For reasons mentioned in our last letter and many others that might be given a long and trying vacancy followed the translation of Rev. Mr. Boyne to Nova Scotia. It was ended. however, by' the call given to Rev. Alexander Roulston towards the be- ginning of 1885 and being sustained by Presbytery and accepted by Mr. Roulston, his induction to the pas- torate took place on February 5, 1885. Rev. Mr_ Roulston is the old- est living minister of the number and though retired for some years, was able to write letters to his friends here during this pest year. His pas- torate also is remembered by many of our older members and many are the stories told of his genial Irish wit and apt sayings. It is hoped we may have some message from him at our one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary celebration during the coming summer, for it is always a pleasant and cheering note that he writes. Rev. Mr. Roulston was train- ed ln the Reformed Church and it must be acknowledged that a train- ing there was thorough. I-le was a profound theologian of a deep and scholarly type, not ready to compro- l‘ mise with any of the new and mod- e n ideas. His preaching was the sound evangelistic type that has led many to accept the truth and decide for Christ. If we add to these gifts 0. strong pastoral capacity and a friendship that holds, we can see the success of his pastorate assured. He was also'a valued and important member of the Presbytery and the travelling in those days was not nearly so convenient as at present. ‘The increased number of meetings held and thc long and tedious jour- neys-told even on his strong and rugged constitution, and though still man in the very prime of life, his ealth began to show signs of fall- ng, as had been the case of some of is predecessors in the same field. his led him to cherish a desire for more compact field of labor on| ie mainland, and he received and accepted a call to St. Luke's Church, Saltsprlngs, Nova Scotia. The pas- toral tle was dissolved on June 30, 1891, and at the same time in answer to a petition from the congregation of Murray Harbor South, the con- nection of these charges was dissolv- lil now the history of these two ing to the parting of the ways, it will be henceforth devoted only to the north congregation with which thc writer is associated. Murray Harbor South was connec- ted with Little Sands and afterwards Murray River was added. The Rev. Ewcn Gillis was inducted as pastor here on May 3, 1892 and here our narrative for this part of the con- gregation closes. Murray Harbor North and Peters Road were the field as then constitu- ted and the same relationship has continued ull tho present time. Rev. Mr. Roulston left the field in good condition, but the taking away of half the membership made the re- mainder weak and the prevailing de- pression at the time caused the peo- ple to wonder if they would rise above the status of a Home Mission Field. But the faithful labors of Rev. Mr. Roulston had in the mean- time borne fruit in the resolution of the elders to stand fast to their pro- fession and as the buildings were ln' excellent condition, they decided to ask Presbytery for supply that they could consider for a call. Let us in this place pray that his evening of life may be comforted by feeling his work well done.
