I ssk the house t0 bear with me while I give a brief recital or the ivrvwlt position M I see it. On the 23rd instant. the da be- fone yesterday, the ferry P nee Edward Island was held up at Bor- den with o. leaky boiler. and there is now no conveyance by boat be- tween ihe mainland and the island. All freight and passenger move- ment are held up. and the only chance to get on and of! the Island is by air. Just how long it; will take to repair the boiler is not known. I am advised that inst week there were over one hundred cairloads of freight at Tozmentine awaiting’ shipment to the island, and in addi- tion to the ordinary shipments of live stock moving olf the island. over two hundred reeler cars were required to ship potatoes to the United States. These potatoes rep- resent a value to the farmers oi’ ap- proximately’ $1,000 per car, and if the situation does not improve very shortly a. verv severe loss will be sustained. I understand that the transportation committee oi’ the Charlottetown board of trade 1116i’- on the 23rd instant and passed a. resolution, which W38 telegraphed to the Prime Minister. but: sn far as I know no answer has yet been received. I placed some questions about‘. this matter on the order paper for the purpose of eliciting some infor- mation, but the answers brought down on Monday last indicate that nothing is being done to improve the situation. Of course, when these questions were placed on the order paper the present ferry was not out or commission. I am also advised that if an order had been given in thr- Uiiit-ed States for a new ferry within n reasonable time after the Charlottetown was lost. that order could have been filled. since they are filling orders over there lor ice- brenirers and so on for the great; ken". Will lire Prime Minister or the Miiiistoi" of Transport, or in his ab- sence the Minister oi’ Munitions and Supply. who has hud per- haps more to do with this mailer than anyone else. indicate what is intended to be done to cone Wlill the present situation, which L; Yiipltlly gain: from burl to worse. perhaps through no fault on the part- or anyone in particular but because ol delay in dealing with the situation. Hon. Mr. Rowe's Reply Hon. C. D. HOWE (Minister of Munitions and Supply): This mat- ter has been giving the government s. great. deal of concern. I presume that the Department oi Munitions and Supply is the bottleneck. The position is that in order to rebuild this ferry we would have to give up a berth in one of our shipyards f0!‘ a period of some iifteen months. We would have to divert sufficient steel to build probably two Ol‘ three twin screw corvettes. whim are bncily needed; and considering the urgency of our naval requirements and of shipbuilding generally, we hnive not thought it advisable to do tli s. My hon. friend is quits mistaken as to the possibility of having tho ferry built in ilie United States. That possibility was explored im- mcdialely nlter the sinking. We scoured the second-hand market there. and looked into the position ni’ the shipyards. At that time every shipyard urns controlled by the gov- ernment, and it was quite impossible tn izet. n berth. rhe service is carried on at the moment by n car terry which hand- led the service until i929, I think, and which is a perfectly good terry. There are two car ferries on the run. but at present only one oper- ntes: and it is not unusual {or the present ferry to carry on the service ior six weeks or two months at this time oi year. That ferry ls operat- ing, There was a short delay while a boiler was overhauled or repaired, but these things do occur when there is only one boat in operation, causing a iemporniy tie-up of cars. But unless this service has changed tremendously since earlier years the present car ferry should be able to n ndle the traffic with e o ble u; ' w '“ "' " °"°..'°.!:"“*"i.. ...t':..t°.i“t":it tu-.w.'unir.:....'""..tz first: t." mrrr" ‘curb i" "W" "" ’“"°'“"“‘t'i tilt‘: ""- ““' "‘ people on the Mill." he slid. “One of the ui""r- Y lie Hane- A.
