ANECDOTES IN _A BREEZY AUTO-
BIOGRAPHY.
"I believe," writes Lord Charles
Beresford in “The Memoirs of Admiral
Lord Charles Beresford" “that I am
the only man who has over ridden a pig
down Park Lane." That is a sen-
tence which gives the key to much
in this devil-may-care, breezy autobi-
Ograpliy. Lord Charles is the wildest
of wild Irlshmen. He is a wilder Iris-
man even than Lord Rossmore, who
gave us the history of his pranks about
a year ago. The way he rode the pig
down Park Lane was like this:
As I was returning home from u
dance in the calm oi a summer morn-
ing, accompanied by a friend, a herd
of swine came by, and among them a
huge animal trotted pre-eminent. I
wagered .£5 that I would ride that
great pig into Piccadilly; dashed into
the herd, took it flying leap upon the
pig's buck and gulloped down Park
Lane, pursued with shouts by the
swinehertl. As l turned into Piccadil-
ly. the swinelierd caught me a clout
oii_ the side of the head, knocking me
oil niy steed. But not 'before 1 won
iiiy wager.
No wonder thai. Lord Charles came
to be regarded by niaiiy of his friends
as a man whose business in life was
to amuse tliein. I-le tells us how on
one occasion King Eilwardvll., then;
Prince of Wales, had heeii opening the
new hreukwuler at Holyhead, and
dreadfully bored by the proceedings,
so that he told Lord Charles that he
iiiiust really do soinething to enliven
ltflll.

the challenge, but on conditions. These

dropped his Patrick ribbon into her
hip, saying:

Entirely at ease, with the sent of
his breaches patched with stull' ol'
itnotlier color from the rest, and his
toes sticking front his stockings, he
was wholly unperturbeil by the laugh-
ter ol' the assemblage.
Although uttired in cocked hut, frock
coat. and epaulettes, I had the speed
of liliii, and waited on hini. Then the
devil entered into me; and when Lord
~-- drew abreast of a big plant. of
painpns grass, I cannoned into hini,
sending liini head first into the grass,
not. of course, intending to harm him.
But to my consternation and sorrow
Lord 1-'s leg was broken below
the knee. I put the poor Lord into his
coacli~lie had at coach and it four-Iu-
liaiiil-and drove him back to his hotel.

destroyed," said lie. “Never mind, they

Practical jokes were always, of
course, Lord Charles’ strong point. Ile
delights in memories of scraps and
scrlinmuges, into which his mischiev-
ous skill was able to plunge other peo-
ple, willi more exliilariitioii almost
lliini in the adventure of the “Condor”

those ji-sts. lie was oiicc, he tells tis,
at Scarborough during the races, when
he and a friend linppened, on entering
the long assembly room ot' the hotel,
to see Mr. Dudley Milner and Mr.
Johnny Shaft standing at the other end

THE PAT OF BUTTER.
There was nothing ut all in the
greut romii. so far as I remeniber. ex-
cept a sideboard and a dish filled with
pats of butter wlitcli stood on the side-

come outside I would throw the pat of

BILLPOSTER IN THE BEDROOM.
One muy quote as an equally renmrk-
able specimen of the ndnilrsl's gifts
the story of the blllposter whom he
found posting up his opponent’s hills
on the occasion of his standing as can-
didate for Waterford. Pretending to
be a lilllposter, Lord Charles took the
man's brush and pail and began to
show him how bills should really be
pasted:
"Sure," says he. "ye can paste bills
with anny man that God ever put two
leirs under. ‘Tis clear ye're a grand
blllposter," says he.
"Dldn’t I tell ye," says I.
And with that I caught him a lick
ground, so that it bled all over me, and
the brush and drove home. sri-lvlnil
vary late. My brother Bill was in bed
and sound asleep. Without waking
him, I posted the whole of his room
with bills, "Vote for Longbottom, the
Friend or the People." I pasted them,

"Why, one of them got into my room
last night."
"Impossible," said I. _
“Come and see,” said he. "When I
woke this morning I thought I had

Lord Charles has niet many of the
great ones of the earth, but he never
seems to have taken them quite so
seriously as his jokes. iiei-e, for in-
stance, is all he has to tell us about
an interview he had with liisniarck in
1889 about fleets and things:
‘ Bismarck said that he could not un-
derstand why my own people did not
listen to me (nor could ll): lor, said
hc, the British Fleet was the greatest
'factor for peace in Europe. We had
a most interesting conversation upon
matters of defence and preparation for
war, and his tone was most friendly
towards the English. lie very kindly
presented me with his signed photo-
graph. I stayed with him for two
hours and we druiik iiiucli beer; and
ull the time his gigantic lmnrliduml,
lying beside nie, stared tlxedly ut ine

The British Navy, by the way, seems

in the days when Lord Charles first
entered it. The present kind of dis-
clpline, lie assures us,~ was then un-
known:

er. Lord Cliurles, it is only t`alr to
say. does not confine his book to funny
story. The greater part of his remin-
iscences coiislsts of a serious narrative
of his adventures afloat and iislioro in
the Soudim, Indin, China, und else-
where, Wlinl. will send thousands ol
renders to those volumes, however,
are the high spirits of the author. his
enjoyment of it joke, his sliaineless
love of mischief, ond his boisterous,
if not too subtle, sense of humour.

It has been decided that the fairest way to dispose of this piano would be to out it
