cities of the same size. There are 40 big
banks, and of the four millions of men,
women and children more than one mill-
ion have savings on deposit, averaging
$150 each, or $150,000,003 in all. In legis-
lation the Australian colonies, and especi-
ally New Zealand, are probably in ad-
vance of the whole world. All the big
cities have public libraries. Churches
abound, and the street cars are not per-
mitted to run during church time.
Within a few years pa st the scientists
have given the world liquid air,in the form
of a colorless liquid air,closely resembling
pure water. But unlike water, the liquid
air is so cold that its temperature is hun-
dreds of degrees below zero. Now an ex-
perimenter has discovered' a process for
freezing liquid air. What degree of cold
this represents may be easier imagined
than it can be set down in figures. Frozen
liquid air is described as resembling ord-
inary ice ln appearance, but is elastic
rather than solid. When a piece of it was
laid on an anvil and struck with a sledge
hammer it caused the hammer to rebound
like a rnbber ball. The degree of cold
represented by frozen air is conjectured to
be about the temperature which exists in
the depths of space.
