At the mouth of St. Peter's Har- bour may still be seen row af- ter row of the old cellars of the French houses. while close down by the see. are the bastions of what was, according to plans still ex- tant, ia. finer fortress than that of Port La Joie. It was from St. Peter's in 1758 that three hundred 'French in- habitaiits and their families, un- to France. by order of the Nova Scotla Government were forced to embark in a leaky transport which foundered within a gues of the Scilly Isles. Many years later, Irish and Scotch settlers came to take up the land, and their ploughs now furrow what were once the streets of the deserted town of St. Pierre. The greater part of Morell was at that time owned by Mr. Worrell, who is said to have been a good landlord. but as he only granted leases for a term of forty years. the early settlers coiiteiitcd them- selves at first with small farms, for which they paid about thirty-two cents an acre. This rent they paid by working for Mr. Worrell; they also purchased seed from him, pay- ing hlni in manual labour. After a hard day's work. they would re- turn to their log hut in the woods with a bag of seed potatoes on their backs to be sowed amongst the stumps of their new clearings. Up to the year 1866 the settlers of Morell heard Mass at St. Au- mciiccd, under the Bishop Mclrityre. to build their church. It was a wooden edifice sixty feet in length by thirty- five in width, and twenty-two feet from floor to caves. The spire rose to a height of seventy-five feet. The framer was Thomas Dunn. That the people of Morell should possess such a church was chiefly due to the Catholic spirit and,pcr- severance of Peter Siniiott. Esq, whose influence at the time was very great in the parish. There is now very little trace of the primeval forest at Morell. By the sea coast, and along the banks of the curving Morell river, direction of mg through the settlement are the houses of comfortable hus- baiidmen who. by tliiiit and en- crgy, have added to the land they originally held. Particularly hand- some nnd luxuriously furnished are the houses of some of the shin tt family who have certain- ly lot nothing by their uiiiailiiig generosity to the house of God. All through the settlement. one is struck by the fine orchards of the farmers; apples of very choice varieties here attain to a great de- gree of perfection. The Morell is the finest fresh water river in Prince Edward Island, indeed. the only one that is worthy of the name. Its banks are fringed by shade trees and afford a charming: resort to the angler. for to this river the disciples of Isaak Wal- 'ton flock every summer in great ,numbers, and here the speckled trout are taken oy thousands. . . . There does not seem to be any authentic version of the origin of the appellation of this river. which has given its name to the parish. It is the centre one of three streams. which irrigate this part of the country, flowing through land that still shows the dykes and narrow furrows of the early French farmer. These rivers have all French names. one is the Marie, the other the Mldgcll, probably a contraction of St. Michael. ' Part of the Worrell estate. that part upon which are the rulnsof the French cellars and earth works. was at one time rented to Captain stukely. a friend or rela- tive of the Captain Burns who was the first resident at st. An- drews. After his departure for England, the farm was rented by Mr. Donald Heston, who with his family had come from Lochaber in Scotland to settle in lie St. Jean. Mr. Benton had several sons who assisted him on his farm. He also had hired the services of an English labourer. who was a rest- dent ln his house. One night this servant was out about the farm until a late hour. and returned in a state of nervous excitement. telling how he had seen an old man in the blue uniform of a French military officer. who had asked him to meet him at a given spot on the following night.
