Sir Charles excused Mr. MeMullen’s Bill on account of the recent outrageous dismissals and appointments in the interi- or and other departments, especially the treatment of the deputy Minister Mr. Burgess,—a capable faithful official who has served to the satisfaction of the Mac- Kenzie aud McDonald government?, who is replaced by a man utterly discredited in his own country by his scandalous con. duct as Manitoba’s representative at the Chicago show, eee kk GREECE ~ AND TURKEY, Both Address Pacific Notes to Powers. The second last debate ef this society | for this season, was held on the 3rd inst., when the mewibde rs discussed the question, | *Wou'ld Prohibition be a berefit to Can- ada?” H. Tweedy acted as chairman of ihe meeting. The speakers in favor of Prohibition were Messrs. Mathias Praught, R. E. Murch and M. McLeod, who argued | thatibe only effective remedy for ihe | liquor tratlic and the evils resolting there- from is Protib tion. Give us that kivd of a law and we will progress as we never did before. Mes-ra. Ernest Nelson, Seymour Young and David Fairclough, speaking on the other side, argued that a prohibitory law should not be enacted because in Canada at the present time the sentiment of the people ts strongly against it and it would therefore prove an injury to the country raber than a ben fit. The prin- ciple of Prohibition 1s wrong. Men cannot be foreed to give up anything they think is not harmful in itself; horses, oxen and mules can be driven, but nan generally opposes with all his might any attempt to drive hin as vou would a beast of the tiel’, © The speakers showed how Prohibition failed to work in Maine and other places where it had been tried, by an increase of drankeness, and the use of poisonous drugs—hence if those and other evils hus always followed in the train of Probibition ia yother places, the same might be expected in Canada, That Prohibition bantling, the Seott Act wis dealt with; a speaker on the cpposite side claimed it was ureful asa “temperance educator”—its “power” in that lie was exposed by showing that it was carried the first time and defeated the second time in 28 counties, andin every coantyv where it is stil in force, it was carried by largely redueed mej orities, and it is‘thé same old failure as proh btion is in the States, Tae Jos of about nine millons of dollars revenue would be another result of Prohi- bition in Canada, and, wiih the large amount it would cost in the vain atzempt to enforce the law, this would be too much fur us to have to make up by direct taxation or otherwise, seeing that we are now in the hands. fa gang at Ottaws, whore chicf ability is extravagance ard dee tion.
