That is just why Mrs. Grouse had 'cnosen to make her nest under that particular tree. She had been very sure of herself. she had been very sure that if she were careful she could go and come without ever being seen by either of her neighbors up above. In the first place they would ,not be looking 'for anybody I right under their own home. No one else would he look- ing for an one there either. In fact, most of the Green Forest folk would be keeping away from the neighborhood of those big Hawks, The smaller folk would be keeping away because they would be afraid. The bigger folk, who had no reason to be afraid. would keep away because there was noth- ing to draw them there, Mrs. Grouse built her nest in a slight hollow at the foot of the tree without anyone knowing any- thing about it. In that nest she llaid ten eggs. When lhe last egg had been laid she began sitting on them. Those eggs would have to be kept warm for almost four Weeks. and it would be Mrs. Grouse who would have to keep them Grouse is of no help in this matter. and that is one reason Mrs. Grouse had kept that nest a secret from him. The cloak of Mrs. Grouse was so the color of the brown leaves whch surrounded her nest that when she sat on it covering those precious eggs. she didn't look. like a. bird at all. She looked to be a part of her surroundings. As long as she did not move there was al- most no chance at all that she would be seen. The brightest eyes might look straight at her, yet not see her She was very careful when she left the nest in go look for food. The very first thing she did was to make sure that neither of her neighbors up above would be likely When she left the nest she covered the eggs with brown leaves. then slipped away without so much as rustling a leaf. All the time she kept under cover as much as poxible until she was well away from the nest. When she returned, it was in this same careful manner. . contract Bridge warm all that time. You see.
