Burning Bush.’ To the Wdtlo) of the Heaininer. Sik,—-There appeared in your issue of yes- terday a letter over the sigyature of ‘* The Burning Bush,” in reply to mine contained in your issue ef Tuesday last. I have carefully read my letter as published in the Examiner, and cannot, from the beginning to the end, find a single oflensive word. i gave you, in a few words, my epinion of the lecture on Daniel O'Connell, by the great orator, Dr. Leeming, of Australia. ‘* Merely this and nothing more.’ Yet © The Burning Bush ” says that ‘Th nothy § is ont with an epistle to clergymen. [ challenge ‘“* The Burning 3ush’ ‘to produce a single passage in which the word clergymen is used, or a single pas sage in Which it van be shown that I referred to clergymen at all. There are in this town ‘* pulpit ranters ” whe are uot clergymen, 1 respect the high and saintly oflice of the clergy, and | trast that no act or word of mine shall ever be saig’ or done that will in the least detract from the holy and sacred charac- ter of their work and persons. The remem- brance of the sacrifices that, they made when they consecrated themselves tu the service of the Redeemer, is sufficient at all times to in- duce me to offer to them the highest consider ation and respect. ‘The Burning Bush” uses language which i hope I shall never use. Lauguage, un- christian, uncharitable, ungentlemanly. | am dubbed a wan of ‘* vulgar taste,” ‘‘ a notori- ous publican,” ‘*a man who will not reduce into daily life the advice given him even by ‘ranters ;’a rank Communist.’ In the same remarkable piece of elegant composition, he calls me *‘a canting hypocrite, a man who is neither a pr actical C atholic nor a good Pres- byterian—-an e rth ignorant blow.” If we be allowed to judge the man by the language he uses, it may be safely said that he pos- sesses neither refinement, education nor re- ligion. In conclusion, | am threatened with ‘*the lash.”’-—I wonder not the dagger, for the man who would use the above choice ex- pressions would also use this murderous weapon. One word as to the attack on my religion. [am aceused of being ‘‘neither a practical Catholic nora good Presbyterian.” Perhaps not. But under the guidance of the great God I place myself in the hope and belief that before the judgment seat of the Eternal, the secrets of the corrupt heart will be ex- posed and punished, and that the pure of soul will be rewarded, This is also my be- lief, that ‘‘The Burning Bush” must repair, publicly, the injury that he has done or re ceive the condemnation of his Maker. Now [ must take leave of ‘‘ The Burning /Bush,” for the light that it gives is not the light ‘that it gave of old. He dipped his pen in gall to resent an imaginary offense. If the style of the clergy be attacked, m: ty their champion partake more ef the spirit ot Chateaubriand and less of the spirit of Barere. ‘T rMolny, Lumber, Laths, Fencing on on POWNAL WHARF, on the 20th imst., WILL SELL _ FRIDAY EVENING, at 6 o’clock:— 30,000 feet SPRUCE DEALS, 100,000 LATHS.
