BOSTON, Jan. 22-That the epi- demic of divorce in America is in- creasing three timcs as fast as the eountry’s population, and that its chief cause is the "social disease of restlessness," a condition which may be termed ‘“Americanitis," was the 0Dil1i0IJ expressed yesterday by Prof. Francis G. Peabody, of Harvard, ED€BkiDg in tha Sunday afternoon course in civics and economies at the Boston Young Men's Christian Union. _ Alter giving a few of the federal divorce statistics for the forty years between 1887 and 1907, Prof. Pea- body said: “Two conclusions are forced upon one by these statistics: First, that the divorce movement is proceeding in this country at B pace unequalled elsewiiere in the world; and, second- ly, that it is proceeding at an ever- increasing pace. “Periods of financial depression are followed by periods of family disrup- tion, but the curve of divorce habit does not follow the new curve of commercial prosperity. The divorce habit once fixed does not correspon- dingly decrease. ' A still greater evil is the adminis- tration of the law as it exists-the haste and indifference of courts \vhich, as one jurist has said, makes the breakup of marriage of less legal moment than litigation concerning a piece of land or a cow. In San Fran- cisco in 1900 _a commercial traveler filed his complaint at 10 a. m., 10 minutes later the lawyer presented the wife's reply, and at 10.20 the degree was handed down, "in time,” as the man said, ‘to catch his train.' "Divorces" have been granted be- cause a wife was suhjectto 'cough- ing; because the husband had a has- ty temper; because the husband re- fused to get worked up into a pas.- siou, and because the wife was for- bidden to go to church. "‘The divorce evil lies on the mar- gin of our civilization. It is a sym- ptom rather than a disease. The prim- ary cause of this symptom is the social disease of restlessness, the ex- citation of the nerves of motion, the condition which may be described as ‘Americnnitis,' and which in family life takes the form of rebellion, migratorincss and change. "Thus, the divorce tendency bc- comes a sign not of idecadcnce, but of transition, the cost of progress paid in the emergence of a more stable social order. The /new status of woman contribute for the moment to social restlessness. But that new liberty and responsibility is likely to establish stability in the home as in the state.” . <;\\\§_\ \\ \'\I \ _~ 1 . .' /» e Dobbs” KIDNEY /{l_,,P|. ,Fl`*ll\'\ \<>`_»'f£ __ _1 f .°¢~ili.ll\\\s\` _,/ ‘?/ ...°It pays to buy in this Province. ...°All kinds of novels 2 for 25c novelty store, Sour-ls. 1-25dr3i. minic Cheverie took place to St. Mary’s 'Cemetery yesterday morning.° ...°The Morning Daily Guardian can be obtained at H. Scott, in an appropriate speech presented Mr. Camp with a sum of money in appre- ciation of his services as B pastor of the two churches and his worth as a citizen. Mr. Camp replied ina. very effective manner and after singing, God be With You Till We Meet \Again, the meeting dispersed at a seasonable hour feeling that they had spent a'good and profitable evening.
