Boudreault, on be- half of the Town Council extends greetings and best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year to the citizens of Georgetown. His Worship reviewed many of i the accomplishments of the yearl just ended and looked forward: with confidence and hope of fur- ther progress and civic accom- plishments in the year ahead. Among projects referred to by Mayor Boudreault was the sub- grading and gravelling of Victoria Street, which extends north and, south for a distance of nearly half a mile; the sub-grading and gravelllng of Gordon Street and the gravelling of Fitzroy Street. It is planned to pave Victoria. Gordon and Fitzroy Streets in 1956. North Street was machined. .few years and the necesiiy of erecting a new high school. Every assistance has been giv- en the fine department to provide it with necessities for its work. This yer a dam and water reser- voir was completed at Burnt Bridge for the protection of citizens in that area. Many new culverts and new manholes have been placed for drainage purposes. The town has acquired the scr- vices of Mr. John White as town policeman and i Jging from his past record he should fulfill his work to the satisfaction of all. The old post office building tias been acquired for a nominal sum from War Assets Corporation. and this building may well serve the community to good purpose in years to come. FINANCES GOOD The financial position of the town in an enviable one. and with the federal grant of approximately 51400.00 to the town and school combined, It will do much to stabi- lize and onsolidate gains which we have already made. Therefore I feel the past year has been one of marked progress. and I feel sure the New Your will bring advancement equally as great. I would like to express to the citizens of Montague my sincere thanks for their splendid co-opera- tion in all matters of welfare to the community, and extend to them and the people of the sur- rounding areas. best wishes for health. happiness and prosperity in the New Year. It is published through the courtesy of Mr. Lester Johnston. director of Fisheries in the Prov- lace: The year's operations can be considered fairly satisfactory. Many of the more important var- ieties show substantiui increases in catch and value as well as some of the least important ones, which offset the decreases reported in others, so that the increase in the total catch was 21,064 hundred- weight, with an increase in value of 3301.226. The total quantity of all fish landed during the year was 348.- 164 hundredweigbt with a lauded value of 03,056,227. as compared with 327,100 hundredwelght landed in 1954. with a value of S2,755.00l. Weather conditions during the year were favourable for fishing with the exception of the latter part of September and October and November when unusually bad weather hampered groundfishing loperations along the north, and l eastern shores. There were no very heavy storms and while there was some loss of boats and gear and damage to shore installations. the loss was not great. - tDRAGGER OPERATIONS The fleet of small draggers operating out of Souris was in- creased to thirteen; two new ones commissioned during the year. Those owned in the province together with some from other provinces landed all the plaice. almost all the haddock and a considerable quantity of cod and hake. One filleting plant was in oper- ation in Souris during the year handling the catch landed by the draggers. most of which was fillet- ed and frozen. Another plant was constructed during the year and is ready to operate. Two fish meal lants were In operation also at uris, process- ing offal, coarse fish etc. plants produced approximately 875' tons of fish meal. There was a substantial increase in the catch of cod amounting to 21.894 hundredweight with an in- crease in value of 840.647 as com- pared with 1954. The inshore boats landed 47.912 hundredwclght while the draggers landed 12.210 hun- drediveight. Cod were plentiful 810118 the north shore and were taken mainly with hand lines. The bad weather during the fall months curtailed fishing operations keep- ing the catch down. More than half the catch was salted with the balance being sold fresh, frozen fillcted. canned and dried boneless. Practically all the haddock were taken by the dragger fleet. These fish were not as plentiful as in past years. consequently there is a decrease in the catch and value as compared with 1954. Most of the catch was filleted and frozen. The inshore fleet landed 27,740 hundredweight of bake. while 10,- 836 hundredweight was landed by SP EC IA way five miles southwest of the air base. A passing air force bus picked him up. The other two came down in farm fields about" seven miles north of the base and were picked up by an RCAF am- bulance. Local Hockey TONIGHT MONTAGIJE RINK iAIso New Year's Eve skate until midnight. In that area they were plentiful but did not appear until May, con- sequently the fishermen were un- able to sell as many as they could have taken. as the bulk of the lobster bait requirements usually supplied from this area had been procured from other sources. During the fall months herring twere scarce but bad weather also kept the landings down. The quantity of mackerel taken was smaller than in 1954. Spring mackerel were not as plentiful as in previous years. Fall mackerel were fairly plentiful especially along the north share but bad weather hampered fishing oper- atlons and kept the catch down. Most of the spring mackerel were salted, while the bulk of the fail catch was sold fresh to United States markets. The smelt catch was small being about the same as in 1954. These fish were scarce during the year which combined with poor fishing conditions during January and Fetbrjuary. contributed to the small ea c . SHELLFISH There was a small increase in the quantity of oysters taken. The size limit on oysters was reduced from 31.5 inches to 3 inches which acounted for most of the increas- ed catch. The bulk of the oysters was taken from leased areas. al- though a considerable quantity areas. The demand for these shell- fish was good and prices held up well. More bar clams were taken than in I954, but the demand for this variety is not great. Soft-shelled clams were taken in smaller quan- tity than in 1954. Intensive fishing of this variety in the past depicted the beds to the point where pro- duction is governed by the annual growth. There was a good demand for quahaugs but the catch was down as compared with previous years. Intensive fishing of this variety is the East and West Rivers River in Prince County.
