Carden, Rockford, Ala., on the 13th, and, without any provocation, shot him, his wife and son dead. The daughter escaped and gave the alarm. Scouting parties are hunting the country for the murderer. The London Standards Shanghai de- spatch, dated Monday, says. the situation is becoming very serious. Chinese treops are massing around the city. A very uneasy feeling prevails among foreigners with re- gard to the unprotected condition of the foreign settlemenis. An explosion took place on the 13th, in a factory at Scutari. Late accounts re- garding the explosion say it was caused by lightning and state that 150 persons were killed and 563 wounded. ‘Two hundred bar- rels of gunpowder and six thousand cart- ridges were destroyed. Private advices from Vera Cruz state that yellow fever is very bad there. The authorities are trying to conceal the fact and physicians and newspapers there will give no account of the number of deaths occurring. The fever is reported to be of an intensely malignant type. The Rome correspondent of the New York Herald had an interview on the 13th with Cafdinal Simeoni, who made the fol- lowirg statement : The letter to the Irish Bishops had no political aim_or purpose. Into political questions the Holy Father cannot and does not enter. The letter was disciplinary and written in the interests of morality and disripline only. It could mat ter nothing or very little to the Holy Father whether Parnell received a testi- monial of 10,000 or 100,000, or 1,000,000 lire.
