It contains no single sentence Worth a moment’s notice, but the one which comes nearest to such value is this: “Utopian smoke is particularly applicable to all The Guardian’s visionary schemes-they are all worked out in clouds of smoke, they always end in smoke.” As our readers know The Guar- dlan’s schemes for progress, improvement and the advancement and betterment of the community have been many and vari omaha have hannah sure with on moral and physical uplifting of the com- munity. Space will not permit nor the occasion require that we shall refer at the present to more than two of these. one or chess is prohibition or the nqh tramc of which The Guardian has been from the beginning an earnestand con- sistent advocate. There is another Char- lottetown daily which spent its time and effort/in advocating a license system and abusing The Guardian for its advocacy of prohibition. Yet the license law went by the board and a prohibitory law took its place on the statute book, and more wonderfull still, it has been our pleasure to record that the organ of the licensed saloon has bceome converted and now supports the prohibitory law I Surely this particular scheme of The Guardian and _those for whom it speaks did not alto gether end in smoke. We mention the in cident in no reproaohful spirit, but_sim- ply as an instance in which The Patriot by of a public opinion which it cer- tainly ` not create felt compelled to join Guardian in a really praise- wcrthy nioyement. " ahothée’ incident is one which had much do with the sanitary condition, the cleanliness and convenience as well as the credit of the city. We refer to the question of sewerage. Everybody would now hink it discreditable to' the » rapital city Sf Prince Edward Island if we had not a system of sewerage. The Guardian as, all Charlottonians know was the earnest advocate of that measure PERHAMENT CURE FOR 1\"EURA` LGIA. While TIN Patriot was setting forth from dl! 9° 391 that sewerage was not needai, that We could not afford the cost, that the sewer! would freeze up in winter, that the esclil' ing gas therefrom would DOWN a°m'_ citizens on the street, that the sewa|!¢» lf discharged into the harbor would poison the ash and desc-oy hu possibility °f-h¢ch- ing in the waters, The Guardian was cor- recting these silly notions and settiui! forth reasons fer the proposed ll1lPl‘°V° ment which reasons everybody now knows to be sound and sensible. The matter was eventually _referred to the people who were convinced of the Isoundness of The Guardians advocacy and who did not believe in The Patriot’s ignorant and puerile objections, and the result was a two-thirds vote in favor of the improvement. The scheme, whether The Patriot still thinks it visionary or not, did not end in smoke. It ended in a satisfactory public improvement which no intelligent citizen would willingly bc without. The Patriot in that as in many other matters played the portof Ml 9b- `st.ructive, and only fell into line when gfurther obstruction had become futile. There were other workers, the late Dr. James McLeod, James Mc- Donald' and many others, who were most energetic and convincing workersin the good cause, who supplied facts and arguments as well, but the press battle for this important improve- ment was fought out by The Guardian. If the Patriot desires to have its m cm- ory further refreshed in regard to schemes advocated by The Guardian, schemes that were not visionary and did not end in smoke, it can be accommodated almost any day of the week`. --_......___ . Another shooting with resultant maim- ing and it may bc the loss of a limb, this time as so often before, the resultof a with a grain of morality and intelligence who in the light of such facts occurring from year to year is not convinced that the drinking saloon is the fruitful parent or came me bloodshed s Thinking mm in many countries are in even larger* numbers Ireacbing thefconclusion that “thc saloon must go.” Here wc have a law which is designed to close the saloon that end which is known to modern civili- sation. To enforce that law and close ufp chess dons or ashohohsry and _violence is auobject worthy of the best efforteof the best men and women in the land. To per- mit these dens to remain in~ope_ration"is to bring upon the entire community the sin and shame of blood-guiltiness. 11.; Those respectable and seemingly -relig- ions persons who are opposed to prohibi- tion ought to reconsider their attitude in the light of current events. -Friday night’s shooting is but one of ten thou- sand such that have occurred about the world within a year past in the whiskey saloons of the world. Thekecpers of these saloons are -all opposed to prohibition. They want the sanction of law and the re-_ spectability of license. They feel better when some one having a recognized posi- __tior'i~ in society or it may be in the church speaks in ' favor of a license cyg- tcm and against prohibition. There are two parties in the community, _ one desiring that the saloons shallbcrooted out and t-he other party desiring that the saloons shall be kept open. We invite fthe latter to look back over only oneyear and count the victims of the saloon in Charlottetown. How many shortened lives, how many sorrowlng homes, how many deeds of violence and crime I Think it over. UPSET SCALDING WATER.
