10 Hoop realities UPEI's winning women of basketball According to coach Tracy Ellsworth, the key to success in AUAA women’s basketball is a fine mix of sen- jor experience and quality rook- ies. If this is the case, then this season’s women Panthers appear well on their way to unlocking the door to the league championship. “We' recertainly looking to win the AUAAs. [But there’s] a lot of work ahead of us yet.” Ellsworth says that if they win the title, they're look- ing to represent the AUAA well at the national level. UPEI is currently two points ahead of Memorial Uni- versity in the league standings, and boast a record of 11-2. The women split their last games against Memorial with close scores, and will be play- an 7 ‘a ye FV a. 2 ing their last last weekend of the season in Newfoundland. Eirann Rigby and Jennifer Johnson have been contributing substantially to the strong season, with 22 and 20 points per game respectively. Marie-Claire Couture rounds out the triad of veteran perim- eter players. Ellsworth notes that their play has been instru- mental. “They want to win badly this year,” she said. “They lead by example, as well as by voice.” But the team does not stop with these leaders. “Our second lineup is comparable to other teams’ starters,” said Krista Connolly, a second year forward. “We've got more than one person scoring all the points... : AY ee _ Cit ay 1 a deep bench.” Connolly adds that, with eight rookies, the team is one of the youngest in the AUAA. This is complementary to UPEI’s fast, athletic game. The level of play in the AUAA this season has been on track with the past number of years, Ellsworth says, with all of the league's teams play- ing very competitively. The team must be prepared every night in order to do well. With seven games left in the regular season, Ellsworth says that the team is capable of going 7-0. Whether they willor not, she says, is upto the team. “We've been ready more often than not,” she said. “I have high hopes and so does the team.” The Cadre + 10February 1998 UPEI/Myron’s I.B.L.
