Ir is all times an agreeable task to congratu- late, whatsoever the sutfcct of congratulation may be, but by a conventional tacit agreement among Englishmen and their descendants, the weather is par ezvcllence, a topic that never tires. Our first salutation is “ good morning " or “ good day,” which has given occasion to foreigners to remark, that a line day in England is such it rarity, that the either of thankfulness or of prayer. Our salu- tation of good morning or good da is either, say they. meant as ii sign of inutua rejoicing because the day is fine. or imprecatory, that is, “ may it he a good day or a good morning," for the expression is equally in use whether the weather be fair or foul. In the East, atiiong the Arabians and some others, the salutation is, Salam Alicoom, “ is it eace ."’ to which the reply is Alicoom Salem. " it is peace,” and this arises from the hand of‘ the descendants of Ishmael being against every man, and every man's hand being against them ; like our “good day,” it has DBCOIIIO the usual salutation in the crowded city or the desert plain, whether clo- thed in robes of peace, or nrmcd from head to heel, main reunions :1 nos moutons. We intended to congratulate our readers on on the fineness of the weather, it is almost im ossihle to conceive liner. With a. glorious right sun shining directly over us, giving fulness and ripeness to all the fruits of the earth; its ex- treme ardor is tempered b refreshing breezes, which makes it almost impossible to resist spending the greater art of the day in the open air. This is just t 0 weather for Picnics and Excursions b land or water. The country is looking benuti iii. and there is every pros- pact of a bountiful harvest. We hear some crouking about the weevil, &.c., but this is always heard, let the reason be what it will. We should take it kindly of our intelligent ree.ders—ni-d we have many-—if some of them would extract from the meteorological notices that have for the last few years is poured in the Royal and II.as7.ard's Gazettes an the Islander, the average of cold and heat, the number of rain or snowy days, as well as the prevailing win s that blow during the twelve months. It would serve to fill up many a leisure hour or two with an interesting and useful occupation, and alford a valuable age in our Island Statistics. We shall with much pleasure pub- lish the results. We are convinced, that it will turn out, that there are in P. E. Island fewer days in the course of the year, in which 0 person cannot take healthful exercise in the open air, than in any given portion of either I rope or America. Tut: , that “ new brooms sweep clean,” and one would sup osc, that our new ollicials, —the Mayor an Common Couucillors—to judge by the constant attendance there has been at the Mayor's Court during the first week of their administration of the police, are no ex- ce tion to the rule. But the truth we believe is, that they have had no occasion to o in search of business. If they have been sedu ous- Iy occu ied, it is because, that from ii. conjunc- tion o circumstances, breaches of the peace have been more frequent than they usually are.
