Last year the estimate was $3,000 and it. cost us $8.200 and some odd dollars. Mr. Arecnault: How do you account for that? ' Premier» Saunders: There ls no doubt about it, that so far as main- tenance goes the more inmates you get the more it is going to cost. Mr. Arssnault: Are there twenty- one inmates in that jail? Premier Saunders: I derstand there are seventeen at‘, nt. Mr. Arsonault: There seems to be some complaint around Summerslde about the way things are being run. There seems to be extravagance in groceries. for instance. What is the cause of this? Have groceries gone up? Or l; there a difference in the menu? Iromler Saunders: I might tell my hon. friend that shortly after I be- came Premier and Attorney General I wanted in know what was going on in that direction, and some lime last fall I discovered. as you have, that the expendltula for groceries was really more than it ought to be. I found out that they were giving those prisoners s. little too much. I gave instructions to glve'them the jail fare, which is not a very gonerou farm-I can inure you. I believe that in the past too much has been ex- pended for groceries, and probably up to that time we were expending too much: but I think since those orders have gone in that you will 11nd the grocery bill much less than it was. Mn. Anonaalt: You paid $360 for moat last year.‘ If the average mim- ber of p.‘ was seventeen, it should hot s... that much, unless they got meat every day, Fridays in- cluded. (laughter). I see also an item for medicine. $61.60. How can you account for that? I do not think those people should be treated with all kinds of emulsion; and lotions. If they I-ro lid! they should be taken to the hospital. Our average bili for medicine in the put was from three w five dollars s. year. Hon. Mr. Sinclair: Does that in- elude the empty teddy o! rum? Mr. Arsenault If you are around Prince County this year we can show you evidence of those empty rum teddles. Perhaps my hon. friend know, more about them than I do. Public Works is such a. friend o! the returned sold- lers as some of his colleagues have claimed to be in this House. but there ls a most unfair and unreas- onable change. A young man, who is a returned soldier with a splendid re- cord, with a large family of half a dozen or more young children. was dismissed by this Government. and a man put ln his place who had no special qualification and no special claim. Worse than that, he has madea very inefllcient official. I think there is only one at the present time; and he really has no- thing much to do. lion. Mr. Stewart: Is that the rea- ' son why he lakes his prisoner for a walk? . lion. Mr. McIntyre: Possibly he taku him out to air him. (Laugh- ter). I think the jailor is a very efficient man. I think I was ill the jail as often as my hon. friend-—I mean going through the jail.
