Skipper Defies Old Omen of the Sea. (C. P. By Guardian's Special Wire) HALIFAX, May ll—It's sea tra- dition that a woman aboard a Windship is bad luck. Any salt will tell you that. And he'll tell you, too, oi the ships that have gone down because a skipper tempted fate and took a woman to sea. But sea fever has gripped Mar- ion Young, and perhaps Captain Angus Walters isn't so very super- stitious anyway. So Miss Young will be leaving her telephone switchboard behind and sailing out with the Bluenose for a voyage across 3,000 miles of ocean. When Bluenose sets out for her barnstorming wur oi Great Britain it will be the start of 17-year-old Miss, Young's second hitch on the racing banker. She signed on as stewardess here in i933 and sailed up to the Great Lakes on Blue- nose's first trip into fresh water. Ill-luck sailed with the Bluenose too on that voyage. She had not yet left Halifax harbor when she came within a whiskers breadth oi piling up on the “Blind Sisters" rocks. Off Canso, a howling gale drove her into a lee shore, and it took all Captain Angus’ skill and every whit of the sailing wifnbe , in Bl to haul her ofi by s bare ship's length. More than that. the whole venture was s financial fsllure, and Captain Angus csme back to wane: vowing Toronto had seen the last of hilnseli and his sailing queen. But t0 Captain Walters’ mind, that was all in the chance oi the sea. when Miss Young stepped sbosrd Biuenose today she got s reel woman's welcome aboard the , For Bluenoses men know bersssgoodssllonsgoodship- mate. “Anyone who can turn up for breakfast every morning has to be s good sailor," the skipper . summed it up ‘ night. As for Miss Young, she's "not afraid." She's going to like it, she lust ss she liked the last voyage- even though a husky crew ember had to haul her back aboard as a wave was sweeping her into the sea that time off Canso. And so tomorrow morning, ii the wind favors Bluenose, Miss Young will forget her numbers and step aboard the banker for the long run to Plymouth. But many s. shake of the head will follow as old salts watch the beau- tiful craft wing out into the misty Atlantic-and into the face of the sea gods.
