No one knew better than 8' Paul that there are some me n with whom it is impossible I kne' there are issues before Which su lence is cowardice. An honest man cannot be true to himself without opposing open ly the betrayal of principles by which he lives. The exhortartion just quoted was written at the victorious close 0 one of the hottest controversies in the church’s history, and in an Epistle which celebrates that vic- tory. And it is from a man who would accept no compromise on the issue in which this Epistle is the last word. We all recognize the import- ance of peace in a community— particularly in a small commun- ity. Every ellfort open to citizens of goodwill should be talnen to maintain it. NO matter how honestly we may differ on questions of public policy, personalities are sure to arise in the discussion and, with them, antagonism. But a deli- cate and difficult situation arose in which the financial interests and personal ambitions of cer- tain people were involved, One man we found who seemed to hold the key to the problem, and we sought his help. We found him interested all right, but he could keep nothing to himself. He would go to this interested party and yet his opinion; then he would carry his version of that man‘s attitude to another who felt keenly about the matter, and so on, until personal feelings were kindled which made an ami- cable settlement almost impos - slble.
