I The Chancellor of the University of ;l\ew Brunswick in arecent report to the views of scientific forestry and recom- ‘,mcnde:l that a chair be founded for i.s study. This is not remarkable, as Newt vincial revenue yearly from the sale oi timber grown upon the Government lands. It is pointed out by Chancellor Harrison that the forests of the Province constitute one of its great assets, and that great waste is incurred from year to year from destruction by dre as well as from wasteful methods in cutting lumber and p in clearing land for the purposes ot culti- vstion. What is true of New Brunswick is also M true in less degree of Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, and it for this reason alone it becomes a subj ect ot national importance. Canada is one of the great lumber exporting conn- tries of the world. Formerly the United 5/ates held the first position in that re- fiard, but now it imports as much lumber, from Canada as it exports. Russia last 3 year sold in the British Isles about $30.- C00,000 worth oi lumber, as against $25,~ 000,000 worth supplied by Canada. Sweden and Norway also contributed largely to the supply of the British mar- ket. The Republic beside ns is nearing p the time when its entire product of O lumber will be required for home con-N snmption, and all along its A northern border in the lumber-:rowing states the l necessity for conservation of the forest wealth cf the country has become an absorbing tbpic. It is high time that the Canadian people had awakened to alike interest in their forests. I In a Province like our own, and in the older settled portion of Ontario wood for home consumption, whether for lum- ber or for fuel has already become scarce. Every year the wood supply oi the cities \ becomes less and the people in town and country become more and more depend- f ant upon imported coal for fuel. We were surprised the other day in conversa- tion wlth one of the men engaged in sell- ing steel ranges in Prince Edward Island to learn that at least one half of their customers among our farmers use coal for winter fuel. Whi‘e this is so there are abundant waste lands, not useful for cultivation which ought to be growing woad fuel or perhaps lumber but which pu lan tree heal sire appl and d. to awaken, keep alive, develop an T045!/,S P7095-Danna* 'ici any falue. iT:ll!gsh9`ls ti c I land importance of a systematic! aiiforc- an Independant Journal, untmmmclled and station.
