IHE Mllllllllll llllllllllllll if 1 ,T- SATURDAY, MAY 25, 1901. 2 V VICTORIA ~ DAY. With varied thoughts and emotions the people of the Britislrlsles and the great British Empire yesterdayjoined in an un- usual observance of the 24th of May. A very large proportion of those now living had never observed the birthday of any other Sovereign that the good Queen Vic- toria. Few can remember a time before she came to the throne and even the very young at the time of his mother‘s acces- sion. She reigned so long, and was throughout her term of sovereighty so greatly and increasingly beloved, that her birthday was always honored with adse- tionate rejoicing. Her Majesty’s demise occasioned the deepest and most wide- spread sorrow, and when the old-time anniversary of the Queen’s Birthday was this year approaching there was a general feeling everywhere that the date ought still to be observed. In response to this feeling and as a memorialtothe best of mothers and of Queens, King Edward has desired that the Twenty-fourth shall still be observed as the Sovereign‘s birthday, commemorat- ing in one his own and the late Queen’s natal day. The Parliament of Canada in common with other colonial Parliaments has declared the day a permanent memo- rial day in honor of the good and great Queen whose loss we all deplore.- There is still another aspect of the day which was doubtless present in many minds yesterday. It was that the late Queen’s birthday might flttingly be set apart as Empire Day, and made to signal- , ise the great imperial fabric of which we I' all are so proud. The Empire as we see it, though its beginning dates so far back in the misty past, was largely the growth of Victoria’s single reign. Within that eventful eraits bounds had been vastly extended, its population doubled and its commerce many times multiplied. Wi- thin that era the Empire of India was proclaimed, the splendid Dominion of Can- ada established and the Great Common- wealth of Australia called into being. The advance of general education, of art, science and manufacturing industry and the improved condition of the masses wit- nessed equally remarkable strides 'during Victoria’s reign. The British steel clad fleet, to-day the wonder of the world and holding the supremacy of the seas, was wholly created during the same eventful period. It is fitting for all these reasons that the 24th of May should be observed as a great memorial day by the present genera- il-*$' It may__be remembered that _a treaty of retary of State and Hon.
