Tue shipment, to-day, of three hundred barreis of choice apples directly to th, British market is a new departure for Prince Edward Island and a very gratify- ing sign of the times, The apples have, for the most part, been carefully selected and packed under the supervision of Senator Fergueon and Mr. John Roberteon of Inkerman Farm. We hope and believe that they will be regarded by the Eoglish purchasers as “a fine lot” for which good prices will be paid. Part of Mr. Robertson’s ‘shipment (all or nearly all of which was produced in his own orchard) is put up in boxes with slata on the sides» showing the colour and quality of the fruit to advantage and admitting the fresh air. Senator Ferguson has given close personal care not Only to the selection of his Own shipment but also to that The Prince Edward Island Fruit Growers Association. We feel sure that both consigoments will be found creditable to him and tothe Province, and be the pre cursons of a profitable trade in P. E. French pride has received a blow which wil not easily or soon be for gotten. Ivis not the evacuation of Fash- oda that is resented. It is the fact of England having insisted upon an uncon- ditions} withdrawa]. This is felt to be a lum liation, everywhere and by every body the news is discussed with furious rage, yet what else could France do than reca!] Major Marchand? There is no statesnan here reckless eoough to emulate Spain and say she could die. That is all very well for what Lord Salisbury Gefined as decay~ ing nations, but for one that is in the fu!! plentitude of ber vigour it would he an absurdity. Most pecple approve the Government’s action, while storming against the condition of affairs here that makes any other impossible. It was felt that Marchand’s success deserved recom pense. Few, if any, people dreamed he would stop at Fashoda. Almost ajl seem to have expected that France would receive sometbing valuable territorially in returo for it,and on the principle that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, the nation wanted the compensation to come before the evacuation. England’s unbending altitude has killed all these hopes, so al- though with the disappearance ot the risk of war there has come 4 noticeable relief in the public state of mind, there is also a feeling that France has been ill-used and humiliated, _—_— NOT POETICAL. ——_—_-— Sirn,—As an cld subscriber to your paper, I beg to thank you for the various poems which have lately appeared. 1 think every event and ‘subject {has been touched upon now except the “Sewerage” and an cli dead borse out on {Brighton Road.
