Had these warnings been more generally heeded. there would have been less loss of life. A hurricane is so different from the lomntlocs that have previous- ly struck Ontario that the peoplo did. not understand the extent of the danger. A hurricane extends out over a great area from its centre. Hazel extended from King- coming. We heard as we drove from the Island to Toronto that the centre of Hazel would likely cross the eastern end of Lake Ontario, but after it entered New York State it swerved and headed straight for Toronto. The cold front from the Yukon and Hazel collided ovor downtown Toronto near the mouth of the Humber River with tor- rentlal rain. The hurricane proved the stronger force and pushed the cold front back to the west of the Humber River so that a perfect deluge fell on the area from Hal- ton to Guelph with Brampton al the centre. The weather cleared along the Toronto water front early Friday evening and the Hydro people phoned Malton asking if they could send their men home. The answer was; "The worst is yet to come." Shortly afterwards wash- out: began to appear on the high- lways and gusts of wind rose to 10 mph. Before midnight a car was swept from the bridge into the Humber River at Woodbrldge and all in it were drowned. When we drove over this bridge we could .see that there had been more than four feet of water at some time lng troops: about 80.000 men for a - future air mm and 20.000 to 25,- '1l.f.:”"f1If11:V:;";f,ht:f fig?” b”d"' are fair- wlndrows high the fields on .ly steep and there were of debris showing how river had been. in the the adjoining hills.
