B11 Jame: l0 Barlon. MD. FINDING OUT THE FOOD OR FOODS THAT CAUSE DYS- PEPSIA When we think of foods that may cause hives (urticaria) or other conditions such as asthma, eczema, or a running nose (rhin- ltls), our first thought may be of strawberries or tomatoes or other fruits and vegetables. And when we think of attacks of indigestion and gas formation we may think of cabbage, onions, cauliflower, cucumbers and radishes. Yet; Dr. Walter Alvarez of the Mayo Clin- lc, who has done so much research work on digestion and food says in the Ohlu State Medical Jour- rial: "How many patients there are who ask tot" a diet slip and how muny there are who could be helped or cured if we were only to teach them how to find the foods which are causing their gas or itidigestiun or headaches m‘ puln in abdomen. We now realize that one-fourth of the dyspeptic patients are particularly sensitive to one or more foods and that. the comniotiest are milk and eggs which we have always looked upon as particularly safe for the sick." It utlll come as a shock to itzany to know that at least one ln every foul" dyspeptics have no trouble with stomach, intestine, liver or gall bladder; all their symptoms‘ are dtie to eating one or more of the good tiotlrishing foods we cal; tiearly every day. How can one lind out what food oi" foods are causing the dyspepsia? "There are two princpiul ways of finding out the offending foods. When the pain or indigestion or llllgfillllt‘ (one-sided headache) comes ln attacks at intervals of weeks or months a written record should be made of the unusual foods, not eaten every day, which were eaten in the twenty-four hours before the tipset, and pur- tlcularly at the previous or last meal just before the attack. After three or four attacks examine the record to see if there was any-one food that was eaten before each upset. If htere was, this food should be left alone to see lf relief is ob- tallied.” If the disturbance ls present every day, a diet with lamb, rice, butter, sugar. mid canned pears ls used as these foods seldom to themselves and an examplo chem-Halifax Chmnicll. téivllle Chamberlal N orsemen First In (J. Were the Norwegians the find white men to be seen tn Canada? 1s it tble that Henry Hud- son, the bold English navigator who discovered and explored the bBY which bears hi3 name in 1610, was réot the first white man to visit Jacques Cartier. WhO ascended the St. Lawrence river in 1635, the first Europen the In- dian; in the interior of Canada had seen The evidence now available seems to overturn clatms which have been long accepted by Cana- dians concerning the early history of the country. The writer suggests that the first white men seen in what la now Canada were Norwelglans, tuid not French upon the evidence submit- ted. With this statement he ed- vances the theory that the band of “white Ind-inns" on the west shore of James Bay Just north of the Albany river, are the descendants of our first white arrivals —who came probably before Columbus discovered America. Champlain came to the St. Law- rence 1n 1603, going up the ‘river as far as Montreal Island, and the Lachlne rapids. Can it be doubted that the rea- son the word spread south from James Bay and imposed itself on so many tribes was simply be- cause 1t. described forcefully some- thing which these southemers had never had a. chance to name for themselves? The Moose Crees called the first white men "wmnlstlkosesew," or "wamtstlkose," which ls still used by them in a shortened form. Thus Hudson Bay knew the white men as sailors who were sommetimes shipwrecked. while the southern James Bay Crees knew them as the "wooden ship men " Both sections recognized them as coming from the sea Cabot discovered Hudson Strait. 1n 1498. but there 1s no record that he ever entered Hudson's Bay Hudson explored the bay In 1610- "HudsonWBHY?"
